I know this will probably come back to bite me on the arse next week but, after making some good progress, I want to nail my colours to the mast and get to single figures by the end of the season.

Ever since I started playing, people have said, if I played enough and practiced, I could get to single figures. I've just never played or practiced enough. :(

I guess I've never really believed that I could do it either.

But, after several rounds in the 70s in competition, I'm actually starting to believe I can get there too.

Mentally, I'm much stronger now as well. A bad first couple of holes would kill me but now I know that I can get it back. Today, for example, 7 over front nine and 1 over coming back.

Even in a couple of really good rounds, I've still left 3, 4 or 5 shots out there easily, so there is much room for improvement. Not least in my short game.

Assuming (after today's round) that I have got cut to 11.7, how many shots under my handicap would I need to be to get to the magic number of 9.4.

I know that the CSS will affect that but I'd like an idea of what I need to do to get there.

I would say 12 under to get to where you want, decent target for you, don't expect to chomp all that in 2 or 3 goes but over a month or two if you play decent you'll get there.
Remember if you have the odd nightmare hole it'll only be nett double bogey for handicapping so as you say keep a clear head and stay focussed! There will be some duff scores along the way but you've got to win the war, not every battle.

I definitely don't expect to do it quickly at all.

I'm just starting to think that it is possible and breaking it down into 12 or so shots (plus a few more for the odd 0.1 and the CSS), it is "in reach" for me.

Quite strange really, as when I started back last year, I thought around 15 would be about my limit.

Like me and my quest last year which you can see from my handicap didn't quite pan out as I hoped and I went up a shot. I still feel I have a single figure game in there but have decided it won't be the be all and end all anymore and I'll take it as it comes. If I start playing well (anytime soon would be nice) then the cuts will come and the handicap will take care of itself. Of course one more 0.1 and I'm off 13 and it makes it that bit harder to reach 9.4 but we'll keep plugging away

I certainly don't intend to really spend a huge amount of time on it just to get an hour or two practice in every week and then play Saturday & Sunday. As you say, take it as it comes. There are more important things in life than golf. :)

I will take your back nine to match my front nine of 4 over today. :D

I feel the same I know its there but all I need is a bit more consistency and I will be flying, the changes made after my last lesson are really starting to bed in now and thankfully with the longer evenings coming in can get to the course a bit more!

Henry - just take care of the golf and the numbers will take care of themselves.
I got to 9.2 in late 09, and am still hovering at 9.8, so very hopeful too of getting back down there.

For me, it's all about the Doubles - keep those feckers off your card and we'll more then likely have a good score !

Lets see if we can both do it before our Matches come round in the summer ?

Never a truer word spoke, shot an 80 yesterday(par 71) but could have been so much better without the 4 doubles :D, 8 over for 4 holes and 1 over for the other 14 holes so yes at our level its doubles that will kill you.

Keep them at bay and the scores will come

Definitely.

My course management is getting better and better. I still chuck the odd double in but far less than I used to.

I just need to start making some birdies as that's something I just don't do enough of.

I think I'd rather be off 13 for the Volvo Matchplay though!!! :D

If we get drawn together I might have to send a link to this thread to the organising committee! :D :D
