I was playing in a compatition today and i hit my drive then found my ball and a man on hte next hole had hit the exact same ball as me but he then said this wasnt his ball so i hit on the green then he said that it was his ball so I had to go back and play my forth should this be fair.

Yes - it is your (the player) responsibility to make sure you can identify your own ball...

Invest in a permanent marker, they have saved my bacon more times than enough when I was just lining up and noticed it wasnt mine. Once with a titleist prov1 No. 7, two off them within 2 yards of each other, what were the chances of that!

Yes. In strokeplay a player incurs a penalty of 2 shots for making a stroke or strokes at a wrong ball. He must correct his mistake by playing the correct ball. If he fails to correct his mistake before making a stroke at the next teeing ground or if it is the last hole fails to declare his intention to correct his mistake before leaving the putting ground he is disqualified. Rule 15-3 b page 77 of the rules of golf

Its one of those rules Mono that just doesn't feel very fair at the time does it?
I had one last week where i missed the fairway with my drive by about 2 feet, i'd well out driven my oponents nut the ball plugged to the point of being unplayable due to the very wet ground, so i had to drop my ball and take the penelty. Infact this has happened to me twice in the last month. Its hard to get your mind back after something like this, so i know exactly how you must have felt.

If the other guy had played monos ball to the green and then realized, would mono have to drop asclose to the area where the ball was before it was played?

It may seem harsh Mono, but a lesson learned.

Before your round, make sure that every ball that you might use in the round is marked in such a way that you can positively identify it. Declare what ball you are using on the first tee and make sure that your playing partners are aware of your "mark". If you change balls during the round, again declare and show your mark.

If your ball goes out of sight, in the rough or whatever, even if it is the same make and number as the ball you are playing, you cannot 100% positively say that it is yours unless it has your own personal mark on it.

Another tip is that if you have to play a provisional ball, make sure that it has at least a different number on it or, preferably, a different type of ball.

Unlike a "friend" of mine who always decides to hit the same make and number of ball that he's just played, informs you after he's hit it, and always manages to find his first ball...bloody infuriating that is.

Lol. Yes that would be very annoying, although I wouldn't agree with hitting a different kind of ball is neccesserilly the way to go, I would hit the same type but a different number.

Its good etiquite to always at the start or at any time you change a ball to tell your oppo's what it is.
