Should any man be given more than one shot per hole?

The bottom line is if people have an honest handicap then there is no problem with the system. It is the people that only ever seem to enter enough comps to keep their handicap and then go out and win the big competitions. Anyone off a 24 handicap can go out and have that magical round. A 24 handicapper may have at least 1 re-load from the tee a round and maybe 3 or 4 unplayable lies. So if he does a good round and keeps the ball in play he can easily save 6 shots in a round, maybe drop in 3 long putts and hey presto he has shot around 8 -10 under his handicap. Problem with playing from a lower handicap is that you do not tend to have the re-loads and ball drops on your card. So you will only pick up shots to have a dream round when you hole putts and get up and down well.

No matter what you do with the handicapping system you can't get rid of the bandits. Hopefully the new system that is being introduced by CONGU will help to get hold of them and drop their handicaps quicker.

If I submitted for a h/cap it would be about 26/27 but I can't see me doing it

My tuppence:

In social golf have whatever stroke allowence can be negotiated between players

In comps just have no h/cap. If I'm last its because I deserved to be last based on level playing field for scoring, not higher up the leaderboard because of a system that makes allowences for my lack of ability. I wouldn't want or need the charity just to stroke my ego/keep me from being disillusioned with the game

I didn't take up the game to beat others but to beat the course & myself & if I do play others then I need to learn how to lose to help me learn how to win

Do you belong to a club or just play nomad golf with your mates?

I can't remember the last time any of our comps were won by someone posting 62-64.

I think the simple answer is go and look at the results board in any club you like. There's very few real bandits playing comps any given week you wish to choose. The system works...

I can see why you might think I'm not but yeah I'm a course member at the moment but have been Club&Course member previously & will be again when I switch tracks in Jan

It's just the way I feel about the game, I don't want a gimmie & I don't want free shots (I think in some ways it simply devalues whatever score I achieve) It reminds me of prizes for all in the school sports day :)

Edit: I should add that I have no problem with others using whatever system they want, its just not for me

I agree Hobbit, I have cut and pasted a recent comp from my club here. Not any real sign of banditry there and a lot of comps are the same. Now and again you get a higher handicap player having the wonder game that I mentioned in a previous reply but not often. 7 of the 12 are actually cat 1 & 2.

Congu has a rule somewhere that says you must keep your handicap active by playing so many qualifying comps per year. Why?
They must have had evidence that people were keeping their h/caps high in order to win the "big comps" ?

I think the handicap system is a great institution but as long as it relies on the honesty of golfers, there will always be the bad apples.
Especially when the net prizes are so inviting, it's tempting to feel "if you cant beat em, join em".

If I took up snooker or darts, would I hope or even expect to win a major board prize in my first year competing? No, of course not but in golf people do.

When I played golf at club level, I only had a chance to win maybe one comp a year.... the Club Champs.
Everything else was a waste of time. Sure, I won my medal division a few times and a few scratch knock-outs but everything else was bandit country.
I dont mind playing against anybody in a bounce game for a few shillings and giving shots but to stand by and watch golfers who can't break 90 winning major board prizes was hard to swallow.

Ah but you don't have Sundance as a member of your club, he regularly rode out of town with scores like that before his h'cap caught up with him :D

I quote Bob in full. When my hc was 21 I won a considerable money prize and I put straight into the Captain's charity.

That time I shot 81 gross and 8 (8!) people had done better.

I competed at national level in skiing (I'm not British so the level was high ;) ) and was never given some time allowance at the beginning of my career. Like starting with the chronometer at -2".

I will never understand how can someone be proud or enjoy winning that way. If you give me a 6" allowance I can probably kick Usain Bolt's a***...

Ive just looked at this years comp results from my club and the average winning score is about 64. I feel sorry for the guy who shot 66 gross (css 69), playing off 3 who lost to a 77 (playing off 15)... But It's golf. I don't mind. Handicapping allows bigger fields, leading to better prizes and a better craic after the round.. Plus it allows me to play with friends who have only just started (in the same way it allowed people to play with me when I had only just started).

The Problem with 2 shots per hole and the SI system the way the GUI want it is that the holes are not ranked in order, How many times have we played courses and went why is that index 3/4 there is no reason why except to spread out the indexes.
People having 2 shots per hole is fine as long as they have them on the actual 10 hardest holes, 160 yard par 3 with little trouble that are low indexes are 4 point heven for the 28 handicappers.
Our course updates the indexes each year according to there diffculty and it works fine guys get shots where they need them.
Mike
