Short driver distance

How far can you hit your 4 iron ?

Lol!

Daz, have you access to a pro for lessons? Or at least able to get a video up? Could be any number of reasons you don't get distance on your driver.
What is the ball flight like? High? Low? Straight? Left to right? Right to left?

I can't hit my driver that far. It's 12* loft ping G5 reg flex. Approx 200-220.

I can hit my 3 wood, 5 wood and hybird as far most times.

Where am I going wrong?

Does it go straight though? that is the important thing. That distance is probably about average for the average golfer. Some of the distances quoted on here are just ludicrous.

what flex are the fairway woods and the hybrid. I only ask because I can hit a 19 degree hybrid stiff shaft almost as far as my driver which has a regular shaft, maybe 10 yards shorter on average.

12 * if you can hit it more around 220 often i think thats not too bad with 12*

What makes you think that?

Lee Westwood's Driver might say 10.5, but it's actually nearer 12 and he certainly hits it a bit more than 220!

Hitting it harder and/or better is the way to get more length. If contact is good and flight is good, then harder is the only other variable.

subconscious may be over-riding conscious effort - either to reduce slice - a swing issue - or ballooning - that can happen with high loft Driver - that doesn't happen (or appears good) with the 3W, 5W and hybrid.

So the questions to answer are....Do you swing your Driver as hard as the other clubs? What happens if you hit your Driver harder?

Comparing anyone to Lee Westwood isn't really going to work on here
Im just saying if you could hit it more 220 often its not the worst thing in the world
Of course always room for improvement and your right, If your swinging the 3w 5w faster then the driver then theres a problem
But at the end of the day if you can get 220 often and straight thats not the worst thing ever

It was just that there appears to be an implication that 12* = short hitter.

Indeed, I only hit it 230-240 with a good wollop with a stiff 9.5, so 220 pretty much ll the time is actually fine.

The1e are 2 (or maybe 3) reasons to have a high loft Driver.

1. Swing speed is low so not enough spin being generated to keep the ball in the air. Hi loft generates more spin and starts it higher.
2. Angle of Attack is lower (quite negative in Westwood's case) so Launch is helped. This has to be balanced against the extr spin generated (Westwood is very low naturally)

The 3rd is a bit of a cop-out. To 'overcome/hide' a swing issue of too much sidespin as the increased backspin reduces the effect. If his is the case, it's better, imo, to get that sorted.

A bad drive is as long as my best 3 wood, a good drive goes 20-30 yards past my 3 wood, a best drive goes longer.

If you cant get the distance out the driver then don't hit it on the course until you have mastered it on the range.

Pretty simple really...

I have just had a lauch monitor session, can't recommend it highly enough, really informative and allows the pro to give you really good feedback, if thats an option for you would suggest you go for one as it may well highlight a shaft/club/loft issue specific to your game.

My 4i is coming out of the bag as it has the same overall distance as my 5i
