I'm sick and tired of buying golf shirts that are either too big or too small because every other manufacturer chooses their own dimensions for their M, L or XL.

Looking forward to the spring I thought I'd splash out and I've just received a Lyle and Scott shirt size L and it's too small. It measures across the shoulders seam to seam 46cm, my Callaway M shirt across the shoulders measures 51cm. Grrrrrrr

And, pants are the same, every set of pants in my wardrobe are 34" waist, I bought a pair of Stromberg 34 waist last year and I couldn't fasten them and I've got a pair of UnderArmour pants 34 waist which would fall to the ground if I undid the belt. What's going on!

Would it not be a good idea to have a pinned thread here with views on shirts sizes e.g. Callaway's are generally larger than their size and Lyle and Scott and generally smaller?

Totally agree. One site that is good is justgolfonline as they put the manufacturers sizes on the page for each item. I was looking for a present for my brother and was looking at Tommy Hilfiger shirts until I noticed that their definition of a XXL is a 46 inch chest.

I've always found US sizes to be larger than ours.....eg would get an L (US) where I'd get an XL here. Would never buy trousers or shoes without trying on....just not worth the hassle of returns. Adidas always seem to need an extra half a size to other shoes too.

Would agree 100% about the yank sizes. I know now what sizes to order in which brand so have no problem ordering online for shirts/trousers/shoes etc. Have heard about Adidas shoe sizes being an issue but I wear Ecco so do not have that issue. I always try and give the shops the business first but if there is a bargain online that is to good to turn down I will get it.

Lyle and scott and Stromberg are notorious for being small fitting whereas US clothing like UA and Ashworth are huge. American sizes are for the fuller figure as a lot of them are.

I'm 5ft 10, 40 chest, 34 waist, 31 inside leg. Size 7.5 shoe.

Adidas shoes are an 8

Puma Shoes are an 8

Footjoy are a 7.5

Nike are a 7.5

Callaway shirts in a M are a size too big, more like 42-44

Woodworm shirts are a perfect M

Gregg Norman shirts in a S are a perfect fit

Adidas tops in a M are a good fit

Puma and Footjoy jumpers in a M are a good tight fit and are borderline tight to size

My Callaway Gore Windstopper in a Medium is perfect fit but my Nike M Goretex jacket is small and tight to size

Ping short sleeved windstopper is a perfect fit in M

Mizuno Tour Rain Suit is a good fit in M

Trousers wise Dwyers are a tailor fit for me, perfect to size as are Stromberg.

Ashworth and Gregg Norman are usually a good fit, possibly slightly loose on the waist.

Kelvin Klein are slightly long to size in the leg.

Out of all the clothing I've bought I've been most impressed with Dwyers for both price and quality.

What I find even more annoying is that the same shirts, in the same size but different colourways can be bigger or smaller than each other. Just had it in some Nike shirts I bought:angry:

Living in a houseful of women it's hard to keep up with the handbags and shoes however being a tight northerner I only buy golf gear when it's half price or less ;)

size tags are only yardsticks and vary comprehensively from manufacturer to manufacaturer. simply try !

I have shirts varying from M (Ashworth, Glenmuir) to XL (Tommy Hilfiger) not to speak of Lacoste who have their own sizes (7 slim fit)
for trousers i use alberto in size 102 which is approx 34W/36L

As a general rule for me,

American based sports companies, I.e Nike, UA, Ping etc an XL
Anything remotely "designer" i.e Lyle and Scott, Boss, IJP easily an XXL
Have occasional oddities like Oakley, an XL is just a teeny bit too tight under the arms but an XXL is like a tent (almost like there's 2 sizes between an XL/XXL)
Puma and Adidas I always have to try as I can be anywhere between an XL and an XXL depending on the "fit"
