While watching the video Daveyboy posted up I found another by the same guy but this time on shat flex. Basically in the vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5C8JUCCrM0w&feature=related he takes four drivers from the same manufacturer with the same flex rating and ges four different results.

So whether you buy a club straight from the shelf or whether you get it fitted, you don't necessarily know if what you eventually get delivered is what you think you bought or got fitted for.

I mean the majority of us weekend hackers can only ever dream of player professional golf, we've neither the time nor money to invest to play as much as we would like, but perhaps for some potential is being stiffled by the clubs that are bought not being the same as what was fitted.

Like many "sizes" its just a name without any standard definition. If you are a stiff from one manufacturer you might be closer to a regular or XStiff from another.

What IS important is that you get the one that is right for you when being fitted, regardless what is written on it. (really who cares if you then proceed to bomb it 250/270 and hit lots of fairways)

When I got fitted for a shaft it turns out it was designed for the better (single figure/scratch) senior player! I was 26 at the time and playing off 15 (IIRC). I expected a shaft that was suited to my swing and thats what I got.

You should not go into buying a shaft expecting to come out with a stiff, expect to come out with the best option for you!

exactly this!

I liken it to Golf shoes, you can have the nicest looking shoe with goretex everything and technology to aid your game..........but if it's the wrong size it's useless to YOU!

That was kind of my point Scienceboy, however what I was eluding to was that when you get fitted you get one thing but when the club arrives you get another, or to take Darthvega's analogy, you try on size 10 shoes but then get given size11's. The difference being that with the shoes you take them back and get the right size, but with your club, the sticker on the shaft tells you all the right info you expect to see but the result is different from when you had the fitting.

Then us mere mortals start trying to fix a problem which isn't there only to create a problem, which was created by the shaft in your club not being the same as the shaft you tried when you got fitted.

Has anyone here any experience of pured shafts. Is it golf hokum or does puring really work and improve consistency of strike/distance for a mere mortal off 11h/c?

In the 'old' days when graphite shafts had seams and were pretty inconsistently built, this was perceived as adding consistency to a build. However improvements in quality and consistency seemed to have reduced the need for such adjustments. Some shafts are even pured in the factory, before logos are put on (some Matrix ones for example).

So it's now likely that the shafts that are being Pured are less likely to 'benefit', while the ones that aren't (the 'Made For stock shafts) are more likely to 'benefit'!

Some think it's all a myth, others swear by it (and can tell the difference if the shaft is rotated!). I'm personally unconvinced of the value, but would prefer a shaft that has been to one that hasn't.

Spine-Aligning performs an equivalent function - and seems to be used mainly on steel shafts. Seems a good idea to make a set 'consistent' where possible.

I would say that it is a very small effect, if any at all. If you get it free of charge, fine, but I wouldn't pay for it.
