USER1999
Grand Slam Winner
When the Titleist 909 drivers came out, I tried one in Florida in 9.5 degree, with a stiff Voodoo shaft. It was a beast, and I didn't want to give it back. When I got home, I thought I'd get a c/f to see if there was anything better available. So off to their fitting centre.
On the launch monitor, the 9.5 head with the voodoo shaft was about the worst combination I could have picked. Way too much spin, too high launch, no run out, etc.
I ended up with an 8.5 degree D2, with Matrix Ozik Xcon 6 stiff shaft. This had all the right numbers. Sadly, in the real world, this was so unforgiving it was untrue. It wasn't monster long either. So I sold it.
I bought an off the rack Nike driver, 9.5 with stiff Axiv core, and this has been great. Until it died just before xmas.
While I try to get this sorted, I have borrowed a driver off a mate. Nike VR STR8fit, 9.5 degree, stiff Voodoo. Once again, I am hitting this really well (provided my usual snap hook is behaving). So well that I was outdriving a friend of mine yesterday when he is always longer off the tee than me.
Not sure what this proves, but it doesn't convince me that c/f is the way to go. It may show that the day I was c/f, I had really unrepresentative swing, but then that's not useful either. All this stuff is so specific, and hasn't helped at all.
