Seve Trophy; bad attitude!

Neither of these guys are really world players apart from WGC events and majors for which they qualify.
Jimenez has played in 4 Ryder cup teams Bjorn has played in 2, recent wins and runner up spots in Europe, they aint hackers!

Who said they were hackers?

I said they weren't world players like Luke, Rory et al. That is a simple fact. Neither of them, nor Lawrie, will probably play the Ryder Cup again, so they may as well play the Seve Trophy.

As you know I was lucky enough to play in the Ping Pro Am. Was partnered with Andy Sullivan and naturally we talked about the Seve Trophy. His comments were very interesting. He said that he would as Paul Lawrie said 'walk to Paris' to be a part of the team. He aspired to earn the right to play or even be considered as a pick. He also mentioned that lots of the top guys shunned the event because the appearance fee was not enough to interest them. Turns out £75k is not a big enough incentive! Unbelievable Geoff!

There is an interesting article on the sand trap web site, about why the Americans keep losing the Ryder cup. One of the reasons put forward is that Europe can blood players in the Seve, so that there are never really any rookies in the RC. The Americans pick the same players pretty much for both events, and so their rookies have no previous knowledge to fall back on. Interesting.

As a few have mentioned, use it as big teams use the Capital Cup or whatever it is called now. Blood some new players and give them some experience so when it comes to meaningful tournaments they will be better prepared. I am sure I read that McGinley got a lot of experience captaining at the Seve trophy which helped him when it came to becoming Ryder Cup captain.
So using one example of exactly what is wrong with modern football to justify what is right about these guys not playing.

That's quite an interesting way to defend these players.

He does. He plays more events than those lads because he has to try and earn enough dosh to keep his card. Westwood has played 19 tournaments in the states and 9 in Europe. Given that the 4 majors and the WGC events are co sanctioned the actual number is 21 tournaments. Andy Sullivan has played 25. They both have sponsors commitments but undoubtedly Lee has more. I would say they were equally busy really. Just using Westwood as an example and not just singling him out.

but they aren't asked to appear in every tournament on the planet:rolleyes:

I think that's just his unconsidered opinion regarding why they are not there. I don't believe for a second the worlds elite would be there even if you doubled that amount, it's not just about money when you have millions in the bank and more coming in everyweek.

My personal opinion is that if the top players being discussed were playing elsewhere, for a meaningless tournament that paid them significantly more than the Seve trophy, then it may be possible to justify seeing it as a bad attitude.

As they aren't playing golf this week, then no, I think it's fine. Unless you have actually spoken to these players on a personal level, you have no idea why they aren't playing. For all anyone knows, they could be doing a whole host of other things during the year to honour Seve in their own personal way.

With all due respect to Andy Sullivan, he isn't on the same golfing planet as McIlroy et al. He's currently outside the top 60 so not going to make the RtD finale, he's not likely to make the Ryder Cup team anytime soon (if ever) and £75K is over a quarter of what he has won this year. If I was in his shoes, I'd walk to Paris to play in the Seve Trophy as well.

I'm not quite sure that top teams using the Capital Cup to blood young players is really what is wrong with modern football? It seems quite sensible to me as it is allowing the players who would not normally get a look in to get some experience and show the manager what they are capable of. Anyone seriously expecting teams like Man City, Chelsea and Man U to put out a full strength team in the Capital Cup?

It would be nice if all the top players turned up from a spectators point of view, but no lack of respect from the guys that aren't there IMO.

Of course it's (partly) what is wrong with fitba.

Arsenal are typical, would rather finish 4th than win a trophy. It's not ALL that's wrong with football, but it's a massive symptom.

This is about money really. If it was a million quid a man, the top players would be there.

It isn't and they are not. The rest is PR.

And you know this for sure?

I think not.

The arsenal team that lost in the league cup last year was the first team, not the reserves. They just lost, no other reason.

Well two points here, not that I actually give a stuff about guffy fitba, but

1. The manager has said as much, as have other team's managers
2. The teams they put out, and Arsenal have been the worst culprits over the years, show blatant disregard for the competition. I clearly recall for instance, Gary Megson sending out a team of virtual reserves in the UEFA Cup, because the upcoming game against Wigan was seen as more important. That's how awful some football has become.
