Seve Trophy; bad attitude!

If you held a gun to my head and asked me who was playing who, who the teams represented in the Seve trophy, I would be dead. Top golfers will turn up to play a tournament if there is a lot of money on offer, and if not it has to mean a hell of a lot emotionally to them, such as the Ryder Cup. Especially at this time of year. And this tournament is neither so they won't play and I don't blame them. Simples.

As a few have mentioned, use it as big teams use the Capital Cup or whatever it is called now. Blood some new players and give them some experience so when it comes to meaningful tournaments they will be better prepared. I am sure I read that McGinley got a lot of experience captaining at the Seve trophy which helped him when it came to becoming Ryder Cup captain.

So six of the Ryder cup winning players Mcilroy, Donald, McDowell, Poulter, Rose and Westwood have opted out playing in the Seve Trophy. How incredibly disrespective is that to not pay respects to the great man in a tourament Seve founded. And good on you Paul Lawrie and the other guys who have opted to play.

I'm fairly sure they all have more than enough respect for Seve, but the bottom line is the Seve Trophy isn't a big deal in the golfing world. Yes, he's a legend, yes he did a lot for european golf but you can't just create a tournament stick it at the end of the season and expect players to turn up. It isn't the Ryder Cup, there is no real rivalry between Continental Europe and GB&I and I expect the players would just see it as a friendly knock about with their mates even if they did play. For a tournament to mean something, it has to have the lure of money or rivalry, the Seve Trophy has neither.

I do think it is disrespectful and if I was one of them, I would be playing in it.

To be fair, that's very easy to say in our position but we look at things in a very different way to those actually involved.

exactly! I dont believe its disrespectful at all- what do the naysayers know about how these players show their respect for Seve, possibly in a far more personal way than this...possibly.

These elite players are brands and business's as well as family men.

If the players mentioned played in every tournament that was for a good cause they'd be playing 365 days a year. I don't think it shows disrespect to Seve at all.

I always thought the Seve trophy is/was used to blood younger players. I think a blend of youth and experience is a good thing and am glad Lawrie, Casey, Bjorn, Hanson, Colsearts and Jiminez are playing. If you look at the make up of the rest of the players, Manassero (apologies for spelling), Molinari, Chris wood, Jamie Donaldson, David Lynn, Marc Warren etc, these are the next generation of European golfers so its a good thing to get them in a Ryder cup style competition.

I dont mind that the big guns are not playing and I dont think its disrespectful. I like the fact that aside from a few players, most earn their trade on the European tour. The players on show in this years event are quality and equally as entertaining.

The negative attitude of some of the forumers comments on here reflects whats wrong with the world nowdays, we are talking about Mr European tour here Seve Ballesteros, call yourself golfers?

It's not about us, it's about the people who are actually involved and as I said earlier, having respect for Seve and playing in an end of season competition named after him are very different things. We are not in their shoes so can't understand their decisions so to have a go at them and calling them disrespectful is wrong. It's also wrong to claim those of us that don't have a problem with them not playing are "what's wrong with the world nowadays". And yes I do call myself a golfer, but not a professional one and not one in a position to have a go at someone without full understanding of the facts of their situation or indeed reasons for not playing.

The fact is they are not playing cos theres nothing in it for them! Like I said good on PL for playing, former Open CHAMPION eh Mr Westwood, Donald etc.

No, I don't call myself a golfer, I just play golf as a hobby.
Those you are moaning about are golfers, it's their job, and it's their right to play in, or otherwise, whatever they choose.

Bit of a sweeping statement, that one! I'm not too sure that you can justify blaming the ills of the world on people who just don't happen to agree with you on a golf matter! Neither golf nor Seve are at all important compared to issues happening around the world!

Yes they bloody well are. I for one am furious that Seve has not sorted out the crisis in Syria yet, I suppose he's "too busy" to do that. He can hardly call himself Mr Middle East now can he......
