So six of the Ryder cup winning players Mcilroy, Donald, McDowell, Poulter, Rose and Westwood have opted out playing in the Seve Trophy. How incredibly disrespective is that to not pay respects to the great man in a tourament Seve founded. And good on you Paul Lawrie and the other guys who have opted to play.

Exactly. ..more interested in the $ than showing respect for a true legend of the game.would love to hear all their reason's for why they can't play.

I don't hear any barracking of Stensen, Blixt, Garcia or Kaymer who all qualified to play for Europe but have pulled out..

This isn't the Ryder Cup

It's a 2-bit Matchplay to fill a bit of time at the end of the Season

And ,Yes, the money on offer isn't great - winners get 65k, losers 55k.
Most of the players that have pulled out have been playing the Fed-Ex, ok not all went all the way but they've probably built in a week or 2 off - Gmac's getting hitched so he'll probably be lazing on some beach somewhere....

If they were pulling out of The Open or the Ryder Cup then it's worth making some noise about it - apart from having Seve's name in the title it's a bit of a nothing event.

I shouldn't think Rory wants to play much again this year - do you?

These Guys have Families - they don't always get to see them when they want to.
I don't begrudge them taking a couple of weeks off especially as the RTD Finals start at the end of Oct and they're going to be on the road for a month.....

I thought this was a way for the new blood to be tested and readied for the likes of the Ryder Cup. I'd rather see some up and coming players try to make a name for themselves than the old guard play half heartedly.

Take a look at some of the players who have played since 2000. There's has beens, wanna bes and never wases since the first playing. It's not anywhere near being a Ryder Cup

Well there we have it, a 2-bit matchplay to fill a bit of time at the end of the season.

Says it all doesn't it...im sure seve would be so proud.and I don't think olazabal would agree with that comment either.

So you run an end of season comp that no top player wants, call it the Seve trophy so everyone should feel obliged to offer their services and know that if it were the Sir Nick Faldo Trophy you'd struggle to get enough entries even from the Challenge Tour.

Yeah your right...they might aswell scrap it...it's not as if seve did much for the european game is it.They should be queing up to play in this,

I'd have no problem with the players pulling out. It's nothing more than an exhibition match in my opinion. Lacks any real bite and is only used to fill a gap in calendar

Really ??? So an event that was helped set up by seve and is now played in his memory is now nothing more than an exhibition match.all these players that can't be bothered to play in it were the first ones to cry seve at the last ryder cup . You'd think they'd give a bit of their time in memory of the great man.

It's still honouring his memory by playing a tournament bearing his name. But yes in my eyes it's an exhibition that will lack the intensity of a regular tournament. And it's giving an opportunity to a few lesser known players who may use it as a stepping stone to Ryder cup selection some day. Timing of it is bad if they want to attract the top players

Why's it bad timing...they've moved it so it doesn't clash with the fed ex cup and it's being played the same time as the presidents cup....there's a few top players playing in the presidents cup ?

I think that assuming, say Lee Westwood, deciding not to play in it, is a slight to Seve's name rather than a grown up pro golfer planning his golf year around the tournaments he has to do and the rest of the tournaments each side of the pond that he can balance with his family life, then I think your way off the mark. If the Seve Trophy was a higher profile comp then all the top players would play in it but clearly they don't see it that way, or perhaps they don't see Seve in the same light as you do and I don't think that's the case.

This is a silly argument - that the big names not playing is disrespective (sic) to Seve.

The fact is that it is an end of season exhibition, timed to introduce a few prospective Ryder Cup players, and so it does - Oleson, Luiten. Fleetwood etc are all getting a chance to play and get a flavour of the team game.

If all the big names were playing, Paul Lawrie would be at home, so he should be grateful he is getting a chance to show his respect.

I have never even taken notice of the Seve Trophy. It has never attracted the top players from GB&I or Continental Europe. I checked the team make up on Wikipedia and it has consistently had 3/4 good players in each team plus a load of fillers. The fact that Seve's name is associated with it means that there is going to be an emotional element to it. He loved team match play and there was a gap in the schedule when the Presidents Cup was inaugurated. I would rather watch the Presidents Cup.
