Seriously embarrassed

I have been playing regularly for a year now and have been a little frustrated that I have not got my handicap down from 28 despite regular lessons. The latest attempt was a medal round earlier this month when I went round in 102 (par 72) and no adjustment to handicap.

Played the first round of our knock-out cup for 16 to 28 handicaps today. Was 4 over par for the first 5 holes and 5 holes up after 7...at which point my 23 handicap opponent conceded the match saying there was no way he could beat me! I apologised profusely and explained I had just played probably my best 7 holes ever, and if he carried on there was every chance my game would collapse at some point, but to no avail.

I read many comments on here about bandits and certainly don'y want such a reputation but I am trying to get my handicap down. Another lesson tomorrow so hopefully more improvement! My last lesson was on driving when the pro said he couldn't get me to hit it further off the tee but could help me be more consistent and accurate... since his instruction I have been 30 to 50 yards longer off the tee, and straight! A significant factor in the above tale.

Let's hope I can repeat my best form in next month's medal.

That was a nice win Stub. Sounds like you are trying hard to get better and no one can complain if you are putting in the effort. I am sure things will start to click into place soon.

I wouldn't have apologised given your situation, you know you are trying to get your h/cap down so that's all there is to it. If he doesn't want to stick around pending a possible collapse then that's his decision. Sounds like a sore loser.

Well done.
As JustOne say's he should have stuck around. I was 5 up after 10 the other night and going great guns but only ended up winning 1 up. He obviously had no fight in him.
Remember that almost anything can happen in golf!

I wouldn't have been embarressed at all but would be really pleased. Like already said your working on your game so your h/c is bound to come down at some point and it worked today so good for you. I'm in your position now, playing off 28 although its down now due me playing regulary at my local short 9 holer but I'm sure it will adjust when I play a proper 18.

Onwards and upwards, keep practising and having lessons.

Seems a bit selfish to me - if he'd completed the round with you, even he'd lost, wouldn't he have been able to sign your card and, assuming your form or something like it had continued through the round, helped you achieve the handicap adjustment you are looking for?

Keep up the good work and good luck.

I know the feeling Stub. Its horrible and it just seems like every time you get a card in your hand you forget how to play or something. Enter as many comps as you can and the nerves seem to get better with each game. I entered my 10th comp at the weekend and scored 42 points with 2 blobs. 27 points out(5 over par) then the usual mid round collapse when the nerves kick in again. Im sure your time will come very soon.

Sounds like you are hitting the ball better after taking lessons so maybe now is the time you should put a bit more into your short game practice and most importantly, course management.

Most higher handicap golfers could probably reduce their handicap by at least 3 or 4 shots just through course management.

As you prepare for every shot, you should be thinking where you want to play your next shot from and aim for that spot. Be realistic, you're not going to get on 450 yard par 4's in 2 so make sure you can get on in 3.

Good luck and well done on your win

5 down with 11 holes to play and he gives up? Makes you wonder why he bothered entering. Congrats on the win. Shame he didn't carry on to let you see if you can keep your good form going.

Good for you. You've been struggling, put in some work and got paid back. Awesome result.

He should have stuck around, serious lack of experience or bottle.....

I've only ever conceded a match (that could still be mathematically turned around) just the once. i.i.r.c. it was pure banditry. What you did can be done by anyone on a good roll. He might have had his own run of tidy pars/bogeys on the back 9.

Well done. :)

Thanks for the reassurance guys. The comments about course management ring very true, I still haven't got used to playing the 'thinking' shot instead of the 'pin seeker' or 'miracle' shot.

I'll keep trying with the medals and hope that with better course management the handicap will come down.

I am similar stub, off 28 for a year and only recently had a proper cut after 40 points (could have been more tbh)

Played matchplay at the weekend with Region3 and I was either getting gross pars or triple bogeys nothing inbetween. We know we can do it but doing it for 18 holes with a medal card is like mission impossible.

Keep it up and never feel embarassed if you have a round where it clicks as thats what all the practice and effort s for. As high handicappers we always have the chance to play a blinder and get a superb score and eventually the h/c will tumble and resemble our true ability

i was 6dwn vs my mate after 8holes recently! i never gave up the ghost altho he did run out winner in the end! he was tidy and i was awful! bad mix! gave him a beawing the next day so not too bad!

Great win and well played. Shame your oppo gave up so easily but nothing you can do if hes not up for a battle.
Stick with it in the comps remember you have shots to play with so 3 7 iron and 2 putts is a nett par rather than going for the glory drive and ending up in the clag

Ps. Hope you took your sombrero off to shake his hand! :) :)

No reason to be embarrassed, guy on our society won with 47 pts on tuesday, been in it 2 years & never threatened, some days it just clicks. Well done to you & shame on him for having no sportsmanship, he ruined what could of been a great round for you.

Seems a bit selfish to me - if he'd completed the round with you, even he'd lost, wouldn't he have been able to sign your card ,
.

Im pretty sure that isnt the case, i did the self same thing last year in a betterball format (i think) and we all holed out everytime and i shot something like 8 under my handicap, i was told i cant record it as with a betterball as the dynamics of sinking a putt are different from strokeplay, i.e. my opartner holed out and as a result it makes mine easier.

Not sure if this is just my club however i can see their point.
