What club would you expect to get back spin from....and by this i mean one that pitches and bites.....i get the odd bit from a pw every now and again but what about you??

8?9? LW??

A lot depends on the ball, the lie, the quality of the green and the quality of strike. I've had several feet of backspin from a 4 iron in the past.

And here's a serious reply - mostly us Amateurs pitch the ball short of the pin.
Why do you need backspin?

And in reality I DO NOT get any....but wondered if it was ever going to happen whats the most likely club?

Yeah - the harder you hit the ball the more spin you put on it. So a 3/4 wedge wont spin as much as a full-on TimGolfy wedge.....

Depends how you quantify backspin. Most of my short irons stop quite quick, none spin back. Then again I don't use proper golf balls or hit the ball nicely enough.

ProV's, Z-Stars and the like.
TopFlites and the like probably wont produce enough spin as they are rock hard and all about distance.

ok i remember starting a post a while back about a fade not being a real shot......feel a thread coming along about "is a 2 piece ball a real golf ball"???

Years ago, I asked Ian Woosnam a similar question when he opened Tilgate driving range.
"How do you get backspin with a 4 iron Ian?" I asked. "I can sometimes get it with a PW, sometimes even a 9 iron, but how do you get it with a 4 iron?"
"How far do you hit a 4 iron?" he asked me.
"About 170 yards" I replied.
"Why the feck do you want backspin then?" he said.

Smiffy.....

I feely truley honoured that you have commented on my post with a very sensible comment

and we know that distance quoted will start the "well i hit mine ....."

Going back a few years, if Smiffy was hitting 170 yards with his 4 iron. Last official measurement was 27 yards, although it was into a slight breeze. ;)

Depends on the ball, downward strike and loft of the club. If all are consistent then then the higher lofted club = more backspin!

Thanks for the reply. I understand how it works. I meant what would be the longest club u would expect to get it from?
