Scratch handicappers - what's your exact handicap?

Just had a look at the handicap list for my club we have 28 cat 1 players currently. The best of those being off +1 after having a bad season. He is also the man from the EGU who is in manager of SSS and Handicaps. Very very good golfer but he has been up and down between 0 and +2 for the last couple of years now.

One of our usual players is off +2 (was +3)..playing off a par 71 course with the CSS normally 68 - the golfers are all very good - so each week he stands on the first tee knowing he has to score 5 under par to hit the CSS!!

AND HE DOES!!

that's just crazy, the course must be relatively easy if the css is that low?
he needs to go play elsewhere more often with a higher css and i bet he'd get even lower.

i find course's like crieff much easier than my home course and the css is usually 1 or 2 above par.

My course is a par 72, normally ss 72. It is about 6600 yards off the blocks. We have a member who was plus 5 who turned pro. Held a tour card for two years, but since then couldn't earn a bean. Plus 5 off a 7200 yarder you have a chance, but plus 5 round a pitch and putt, no way. Sad, but true.

Still the best golfer I have played with though.

Sorry Murph, that's rubbish - Chris Wood was @ Long Ashton which is under 6400yds, he makes a decent living. If you're good, you're good - doesn't matter where you play.

i understand what you are saying but i don't believe that to be true.it all depends on not the distance of the course but how tight it plays and the condition of the rough, bunkers etc.i think royal melbourne proved this point with the presidents cup.

like i said my 2 home course's are short but they are tight with a lot of long par 3's and because of this the course plays very tough.

on the other hand crieff is a longer course with a ss of 1 over par and i find it much easier.i've played a few longer courses this year and i find it suits my game better and i tend to score better.

Exactly, obviously your mate just wasn't cut out to play for his dinner. That's not uncommon, some great ams just haven't got the stomach for life on tour.

But saying that being off +5 on anything less than a slog is no good doesn't make sense.

Guy from my place that I played a lot with and caddied for was +4 at a point, played for england as an Am and had a good record...turned Pro and did sweet FA.

Personally I don't think he had the hunger/drive as he had the game in my opinion to play Tour golf.

Now works as a director of golf in Algarve and enjoys a great life though!
