What is the obession with these things?

I played with an old friend of mine on Saturday who is nothing short of a Titleist hoarder in general, but has an unhealthy obession with Scotty Cameron's (bladed ones specifically).

He has no less than 5 (and had more before he sold them) including one "tour edition" putter which he paid an obscene amount of money for. He even has a Titleist Tour Bag in his bedroom which he uses just to store the putters in. He lives in a one-bed flat and doesn't have the luxury of space, so a ginormous Titleist Tour bag is probably something he could do without! But he treats them like children.

He's even just spent a ridiculous amount of money on (an admittedly VERY cool) Scotty Cameron branded multi coloured pencil bag.

I'll admit that they're fine looking putters and I'm sure they're great to use, but are they really wortth all the attention and fuss that SC enthusiasts seem to give them? I don't have a problem with it, in fact, I fine it pretty cool and fascinating, it just seems a bit odd to me, and I'm usually someone who is a complete kit wh*re!

Oh, I totally understand that, I just find it amusing and totally fascinating!

He literally cares for them like children, and they sleep next to him in their tour bag at night so he can watch over them :D

I think Scotty's where the first real widely availible high quality milled putters (I know Bettinardis we about but they were really hard to find and much more expensive). And they have really changed the face of what people expect. IMO opinion SC is not a great putter designer all his best putters are copies of other models his own designs are rubbish (detour, futura etc etc)

Personally I use mine because I like the look and feel of it, it could be a ping I wouldn't care

Scotty Cameron captured the imagination partly through Tiger's use of a Teryllium putter (with the bronze insert) to win The Masters.

At that time, Bob Bettinardi worked for Scotty and did much of the milling on Tour putters. He only later went out on his own, but Bettinardi putters have never commanded the premium prices of some Camerons.

I have collected Camerons and Bettinardis in the past. Now I have a few I game.

Almost all modern putters are based on a previous design. So are most other clubs. You don't hear people saying that Taylor Made 7 iron looks just like a Wilson from the 70s?

Nothing Taylormade have ever made looks like anything from the 70's thats kind of the problem with taylormade

I know what you mean just joking, the putter thing though were the putter designers of yesteryear (thinking mainly Karsten) so good they used up all the best designs, I cant think of many original designs of the last 20yrs that actually worked, obviously there is the two ball but not much else

Tried the Newport 2.6 the other day in a shop. Liked it alot, the look and feel was spot on.

Cant justify the price though with the ammount of care they require.

Would love to own one someday though ;)

Had one. Loved it.
Got nicked

Can't find another make that feels quite the same.
Can I justify to myself to pay £200 for another? Not sure but if my putting woes go on much longer it is inevitable.

I think that many of them are beautiful. But whenever I've tried them, I just can't get on with them.

That probably says a lot more about my putting stroke rather than Scotty Camerons.

I've got a Scotty Cameron Newport Select 2.5. Some days I can put like a god with it, other days I can't hole a thing. The putter feels so good when you hit the sweet spot - the problem is the sweet spot doesn't seem to be very large - hence the inconsistency.

I still like using it though - I just get torn between using it and my odyssey 2 ball.

I have a circa 62 #3, its milled and needs a lot of care apparently, I do occaisionally oil it, dry it after rounds etc but it is not excessive care, it is quite easy, I clean all my clubs regularly so I dont mind it. The reason for me is the feel is fantastic, I love using it, at the minute I have no intention to change. I wouldnt however pay excessive amounts of cash for one, got mine used from the pro shop for a decent price, bought a new scotty headcover for it so happy days, less than 100 quid in total!! :)

I tried one for a while but I find the Yes Cgroove has a bigger sweet spot (tho I do find the centre is faster than the other parts of the 'large sweet spot')

With the Newport I tended to race a few way past the hole or leave thenm very short - Tried a friends Ping Redwood and was impressed with it - consistant (even with my dodgy stroke at the time) and great feeling - just not the same 'cred as a Scotty.

For my money, find the Scotty you like then go buy the original Ping it was blatantly copied from and save a lot of money.

I always find this a strange way of looking at things. Many people won't think twice about spending 200 notes on a driver which they use maybe 13 times a round but will baulk at spending the same on a putter which they use 30+ times a round.

I'm sure there's logic in there somewhere but I don't see it.

I use a Studio select Newport 1.5. Great looking putter, fantastic feel, and being stainless means no maintainance at all. Only issue is glare in the sun, but heck, I live in England, so it isn't much of a problem.

I have a back up Circa 62 No2, which goes rusty every 5 minutes.

I have my eye on a red X, which I will borrow soon, and have a quick test of before stealing off my Dad.

i've got a circa '62 no.3....love it. dont sleep with it though, thats a bit weird, but in a world where people collect stamps who are we to judge eh?

Yeah, I don't get why people don't get the hundred pounds + shaft upgrade on putters too.
