Here is the BBC article!!!

This is very interesting for me, because when I was up at Castle Stuart in July, one of the Club's people when asking us what we thought of the course etc. mentioned that they hoped that they could host the Scottish Open at some point!

I think they could do it! The infrastructure is there for transport etc.

And the course is certainly up to it!

But, where else???

My other possible options would be Troon, Turnberry and Muirfield. Can't see anywhere else hosting it, but who knows…!!??

Where do you think it could go?

But also what do you think will happen to Loch Lomond if it does lose the Scottish Open? Maybe us mortals may be able to play it someday…!!!

Unless they're going to move it every few years, it can't be at an Open venue. It's a good idea. The top players will go so they can work on their links game and earnmoney at the same time.
Would be nice to play LL but I bet it wouldn't be cheap!

I think this could be the making of the Scottish Open! Move it to a rotational format of links golf and any pro would be daft to miss it the week before the Open Championship.

Can think of St Andrews (Old/New/Dukes/Torrance), Turnberry, Muirfield, Royal Troon, Castle Stuart and Carnoustie for starters based on their ability to stage an event where sponsors would expect large galleries etc.

Others to include depending on infrastructure could include in Royal Aberdeen, Southerness, Machrihanish, Western Gailes, Glasgow Gailes and Dundonald (that would also keep the LL owners happy!)

Exciting times...

Kingsbarns could be a possibility alongside Castle Stuart. I do not think any courses currently on the open rota will take the Scottish Open as it isn't worth the hassle and the membership won't be particularly keen on it.

Its difficult to get links courses to stage tournaments other than the ones currently on the open rotas as they just don't have the space for stands etc. Would love to see it held at Royal Aberdeen/Machrahanish (transport issues)/Western Gailes/Barassie/Craigielaw/Gullane/Archerfield Renaissance/North Berwick West etc etc but just can't see it which is a great shame.

As for playing Loch Lomond the likelihood is that punters will eventually allowed to play but can imagine the prices will be ludicrous for a course which is only in perfect nick for 3-5 months of the year.

Kingsbarnes and Gullane too perhaps?

Royal Aberdeen would certainly be in with a shout.

Western & Glasgow Gailes don't have the facilities or the space needed to host a tournament of this stature. Barassie geez a break!

Dundonald, Royal Aberdeen, Kingsbarns I would imagine are the main players. Would the pro's find the luxury and accommodation readily available in Inverness??? I don't know the city well enough, Patrick is your man to ask for that. I'll throw another course into the equation, not links but Spey Valley?

I don't think Royal Aberdeen has the space to host an event of this size as the number of spectators could be huge. They are hosting the Walker Cup next year but this could be the biggest event they can realistically hold due to H&S etc. It is an excellent course. Unfortunately courses like Royal Aberdeen/Dornoch/Cruden Bay/Nairn just don't have the infrastructure/space.

Spey Valley is a good shout but why move from Loch Lomond to go to a course which is not a link?

Gullane?? Christ almighty aint it supposed to be held at quality courses, nice enough but hugely overated so it won't be there.

I really think it will be either Kingsbarns,Castle Stuart or Dundonald, one of the new end 'links'.

I'd agree Gullane has a few bad holes but it has some lovely golf holes as well and has the space and facilities for galleries, no?

Loch Lomond is being bought by the members, although I really struggle to see how anyone could make that place pay. From what I heard there the members pay circa £4,000 per year and I think someone said there are only around 4,000 of them. And I read that there were over 200 staff!! The clubhouse won't be cheap to run. They spent £12m on a spa - double the original budget - it has no pool and shut at 6pm when I was there - there was 1 person in there. The site is something like 600 acres. It is an absolutely mind-numbingly beautiful place with an exceptional golf course but I just can't see how the numbers stack up even if they double the annaul fees. Oh, and they also have Dundonald to run. It is a place I never thought I would play and am very grateful for the opportunity but how on earth do you run it at a profit?

It's always been on an inland track - Haggs Castle, Gleneagles Kings, Loch Lomond so I can't see that changing to links or else it is just a warm up for the Open and has little merit as a title.
I would like to see it stay at an inland scenic course like Spey Valley or even Blairgowrie.

what facilities do the western and glasgow gailes lack compared to dundonald?

Space to erect grandstands, practice facilities, spectator space.

Though on the bright side, they do at least have a clubhouse!
