I'm currently hitting my buffer frequently in medals but consistently playing under handicap in matchplay.

In a bounce match today I won 4&2 and after finishing the round I shot 72 - three over par and four under handicap.

There's a medal on Friday and I'd dearly love to repeat this round for a wee cut.

I think that means staying relaxed and treating every hole / shot as a separate thing rather than worrying about my score.

Anyone else experience this? How can I produce my match play form in a medal?

I had a great matchplay game today, very competitive as it was in the club knockout, I shot 5 under handcap, my opponent shot 6 under.

I belive you think more about your shots in matchplay and so play differently than in a medal. Its a more intense game too so may help keeping the scores down.

Last year i reached the final in 3 of out=r clubs match play comps won over 23 matches and even reached the Volvo regional up here.

but inbetween went up 0.1 in all the stroke play comps. it wasn't till all these were over and done with that i won a an open strokeplay event handicap and scratch cut back to 8 where i started the year on;) :(

go figure!!!

Its down to less pressure. In matchplay an 8 only loses you a hole however an 8 gives you a mountain to climb in stroke play and can play havoc with your mindset.

Its easy to say but try and relax as much as possible during your medal rounds.

Absolutley agree. We have 12 medals and 12 stabelfords a year. We have 2 individual KOs a year. I have won more KO comps than medals/stablefords, yet there are 12 times more medals/stablefords!

So, why do I think this is?

Its all mental and we are indeed better than our handicaps suggest. What I am working on at the mo is getting out of my comfort zone. I consistently score between +4 and +9 gross in medals. I havent shot lower than +4 to par (+2 to CSS) this year. Ive played one (4 ball) matchplay this year and was level par after 15 when we won.

I am busy putting together some notes as a result of reading a few books by Patrick Cohn. Try to get a copy of 'going low' by this chap.

Totally - today was a bounce game with a friend after the pressure of the club championship a couple of weeks ago. The sun shone, we were relaxed and had a good chat and a nice match.

In some of my championship matches I was under handicap despite quite deliberately playing for bogey at some holes.

Funny game.
