Scorecard swapping question

In singles competitions you should only keep the hole scores of the player you are marking for, plus your own as a check. As an occasional scorer, I sometimes find markers recording the scores of all the players in the group, which can be a bit confusing! :(

Very foolish indeed but I am intrigued that it does not seem specifically precluded by the wording. Not a serious point of course.

I though the words did preclude it.

Q. Can a person, other than a fellow competitor, appointed to act as a marker return a Qualifying Score for
handicap purposes?
A. A person appointed by an organising Committee to act as a marker cannot return a Qualifying Score
for handicap purposes and his score must not be included in the Competition Scratch Score calculation.
Subject to the provisions of Clause 2 and with permission from the Committee in charge of the
competition the marker may return a Supplementary Score.

What I don't get is the seeming undercurrent of mistrust , if a player goes onto another fairway or out of sight in trees or some where do ye follow then over to make sure they don't cheat , if a player is taking a drop do you go over & stand by every bit of the procedure just to make sure he doesn't cheat ?

Golf is built on honesty & trust & believe me there are a lot even in my club who don't follow that , but the extended group we play in , play golf honestly & by the rules , what we score goes on the card , end of ..

Is that realy so hard to understand ?

I can't see why you would want to have one person mark all the cards.

I can keep note of my own score and someone's else. Why complicate things?

I remember when I first played in 4BBB matches, finding it really hard to keep track of 4 scores.
My regular partner was thankfully very good at it!

I don't see the complication tho .. ?

I can see where you're coming from Bill.
I've mentioned it before.
You're trusted to play within the rules but not trusted to mark your own score on a card....
Not advocating that it should be done and,as per Robo's comment, could open you up to scrutiny but the lack of trust on one hand vs the trust on the other glares at me.

Most golfers will give an honest answer when asked what score they made on a hole, but there are a few who seem to suffer from selective amnesia! Generally if the committee know of such a player they will ask the marker to keep a careful eye on him or her.

Yep and we trust everyone to play by the rules.

I wouldn't trust everyone , no way , I do trust the guys I choose to play with week in week out tho , , there are far less obvious ways to cheat that writing down an incorrect score .

I would say & to be honest (forgive the pun) at a guess, we would know 98% of the time what the other players in our group had scored anyhow , ..

You'd assume that there are other groups that hold that same belief. That (those) groups are looking at you and the way your group are marking cards.

I'm still unclear if you are just marking one card during a friendly knockabout or if this is being done during an individual qualifying comp.

Never mind the committee , proper golfers will be aware & do this naturally ..

I know in our place the bad counters , bad rule knowledge seem to find like minded ppl to play with anyhow , come drawn comps like captains prize etc they get found out

Yep I see and understand your point mate , we would be bad a cheating tho as we seldom win ha ha

I do see your point tho ..

As per my point earlier tho we trust (suposadly) other players to play by the rules in every other single part of the game on every other part of the course even out of sight , but the same people that we give this trust to are not trusted to write down the score they had ,, ?

Is there not Irony or something like that involved in that ?
