Monty, whilst being a formidable golfer in his prime is a bit of a love him/hate him kind of character. Personally I love him and admire his pro record. I think he will make a great job of captain and we will regain the Ryder Cup under him. A lot of people however loath him so the question is; Who would you have chosen to be the Captain and why?

Monty all the way and Monty to keep it for 2 years time.

Captain Monty has a great ring to it!!

Get Clanger back, the epitome of cool under pressure, German efficiency, good leadership etc etc.

Monty will be flapping and panicking, far too excitable a character for me to be a good leader. He'll over-analyse everything. Saying that I still think Europe will win -

To really get some grit and fire into the event maybe Monty should set fire to the Stars and Stripes then stomp on it at the Opening ceremony! ;) :p

Monty is definately the man for the job this time, the players admire his record and him personally and ive no doubt we will win, however the job does seem in this day and age to be a one off.I agree ollie or langer next.

I dont know him so can't really say for sure but he comes over as someone who would be a rubbish captain, you feel he would be argueing with his players and sulky, but the comitee who picked him, do know him really well and must see it in him.

He was never found lacking when he was a player in the event

I must say, Monty has a much nicer personality in the flesh, than what comes across on TV.

He was a real gent to the people in his group at the Open. He was even receptive to the galleries too. However, people now he has a reputation for anger moments so they try and wind him up. Then, he gets grumpy, and it spirals out of control, when he plays a bad shot!

Top choice, all the players love him (well most), and he knows the Ryder Cup like the back of his hand.

Lyle, never! A true grumpy miserable man, who treats his caddy like dirt and ignores everybody else!

Would like to see Olazabal have a go, and perhaps McGinley, Clarke or Bjorn, if their games give in!

Does it matter?
Woosnam was clueless and couldn't speak in public but he still managed a big win. Faldo was organised at least, he too couldn't speak in public, maybe didn't inspire much and he lost. However the Europeans were still just as fired up as normal at the last one but you can't win every time and the US were due a win at some stage.
Darren Clarke would be a good choice I agree. Why Olazabal though? - good pedigree as a player but not an inpsiring individual I don't think (his silly Spanish jig was 23 years ago) especially for the UK and Irish players that make up most of the team.

I like monty as captain but I think we need a straight talking no nonsense geezer in charge so my vote is for Smiffy! :) :) :)

Yeah, on international TV, there's Smiffy, roll-up hanging from the corner of his mouth, shouting the virtues of PING - with WHITE trousers on!!

All in HD!!

No-one deserves that.. :D

HTL for Captain!! He's the only one who could play each of the Americans off scratch - and win!! :)

I think Lyle deserves his chance purely because he is the last of his generation not to have been offered it which is a smack in the face for someone as good as he was. There was a piece in GM recently and Seve reckons he was the best ball striker out there.

If he doesn't get it and it is looking unlikely, then I'd like to Langer or Torrance have another go.

I think McGinley will be a great captain in the future. Hes passionate about the Ryder Cup, loves team events, is an intelligent fellow and captained the GB&I tema in the Seve trophy. 2014 for McGinley.

Ollie i think will get the gig in 2012.
