I was playing in a 4 man team event at the weekend and a playing partner hit his ball into a water hazard where the ball just about stayed dry on the bank but right at the waters edge, fancying himself with the old shoe off pants rolled up routine he proceeded to shank the ball into the water. The ball never left the hazard and because the rest of us scored on the hole he didn't play out. The question is if he had of continued would the dropping line been from the initial point of entry into the hazard before he played his next shot or would the shot in the hazard changed things?

Decision 26-2/1.

He can drop within the hazard from where he just played

or

He can drop outside the hazard on the line from the flag to where his ball entered the hazard

or he can play from where he played the shot that went into the hazard.

If his original shot was his tee shot, he would be playing 4 in all three cases.

That's what Decision 26-2/1 says. It does, however, specifically mention that the original shot into the water hazard was from the tee. This option is effectively stroke and distance for the shot that first entered the hazard so I cannot see why the option should not be available if it was the player's second or third shot that entered the hazard.

In reality, this is the point where he gets a slap around the head from his team mate for playing such a stupid shot in the first place :D

Actually it was more of hysterical laughter as his mud splattered face and wet clothing made the whole thing worth while
