Mobile phones should be on silent or switched off at the range. If you're next or withing listening distance from the bays, then i reckon they shouldn't be used. It's just totally off-putting (no pun intended!). If your call is that important, go outside or into the shop/cafe... It's plain and simple good manners.

When i gave the guy talking on the phone a death stare, he quipped back "What... you want me to stop talking?", like i was the one in the wrong. He knew he was wrong to be talking loudly on his phone but thought he was above any etiquette that may (or may not coming to think of it) exist.

If the range had rules in place that said 'No mobiles on the range' then I would leave it in the car, but ours doesn't so I dont see the problem. The pro is always out in the bays teaching and talking constantly, how is this any different? Are you going to tell him to be quiet?

The sound of the staff filling the ball machine and the tractor up and down infront are louder than the odd conversation on a mobile phone.

The range i use is very relaxed and conversations are a plenty between users. The only people I have ever known to complain, are the ones who couldn't strike a solid shot in slow motion and are generally looking for an excuse.

Sorry but there are no rules to speak of about mobiles at the range, I for one would not walk away from my work station (bay) and leave all my kit unattended for the likes of someone to nick my gear. As mentioned walking a distance is good enough for most.

My only issue with my local range is that I take my own balls (mainly ad333 &NTX's) and some gimp always ends up nicking half of them with the casually walk over picking up their battered top flites and I end up a few less even though they are clearly marked as mine. I find the best time is early morning with a flask of coffee and the birds chirping.

And I have not heard of driving range etiquette except the usual safety stuff, but I would rather have someone on their phone than the fair weather golfers and their dozen kids running and screaming about the place branding a 3 iron and a basket of balls.

I work in Maidenhead and had to go in for a meeting today, managed to finish early and went to the range that Homer mentioned earlier in the post, Maidenhead Golf Centre.

Excellent place, very nice set up, it looks fairly new or it may have just had a make over.

Quiet, not many people there. There was 1 guy however there who's mobile went off and preceded to have a very loud conversation, the warden was quick to get him of his phone. Excellent

Might have to go back just before a night shift starts.b

Its been there around 30 years but N1 golf have come in as a teaching concern there and invested some money and it has now become a srixon/cleveland wedge fitting centre as well (hence the big bay at the end behind the wooden doors and the artificial green). Its normally pretty quiet even at weekends. I tend to use the outside bays by the doors. If you want a lesson there, look for a tall blonde guy (ask for Grant Sayer) and tell him I recommended you. Great coach who really makes it stick when he's showing you something.
