First up though is our Spring Meeting in the morning which is also Club Championship 1st qualifying round, have been playing well and got myself back down to 3.2 after winning our 1st Comp of the season but have not played for over a week now so who knows what game will appear in the morning!!

Then it's the long drive down to Leeds for an overnight stay before heading over to Birkdale for a 12.16pm tee time, only bummer is I am off the 10th but can't grumble as it's not costing a penny!!

Really looking forward to it as I have heard nothing but rave reports about the course. Will try and take some photo's and pop on a review on my return!

Enjoy Alan.
Look forward to the review and pics.

Still don't know whether to treat myself to a game at Birkdale the day after the Hillside meet.

Head says no...Heart says yes.

Im making a return in the morning after a 3 week unscheduled lay off, could be interesting!

Have fun down the road, is this the one that the better half is joining you?

First part update....played like a ***,point 1 back.Only plus points were that I played well back 9 and many others were crap which is odd cos I didn't think it was particularly tough this morning.

Just home from an great trip to a fantastic golf course.

We were blessed with a fantastic day weather wise and it stayed dry but there was a stiff breeze blowing.

Course was in remarkable nick with the greens rolling true and extremely fast even though they did not look great,as with everywhere else I have played recently Birkdale is crying out for growth but never the less the greens were fantastic to putt on and I should know as I had 41 of them!!

I started on the tenth with a solid par but struggled to 14 points with 2 blobs on the way out hitting some destructive hooks into the muckle fairway bunkers. The back 9 has some great holes with 12,13,15 and 18 being really strong golf holes. The 17th however (scene of Padraigs Eagle in 08) is a decent enough hole but has an abortion of a green at the end of it,the best and only thing for that green is a JCB....it really is a joke of a green and totally out of character with the rest of the course.

The front 9 has some equally good holes 1 is as tough as hell,2 a lovely hole and the 9th a real belter but it also, for me has a number of holes that are either so-so,weak or out of character in 3,4,5 and 6.

Managed to drive it great coming home and shot 19 back for 33 and was in the top 6 with 35 best I think (was a fair bit away from the speaker so couldn't hear but I think Tappers was runner up?)

Top 6 means I have managed to qualify for the 2 day final at Royal St George's but sadly I cannot see me making the date the finals are on.:p

In summary,Royal Birkdale is a great golf course but for me lacking in quality from many of it's Scottish counterparts and would not make it into my top 5 but it was undoubtedly most enjoyable.

Here are some photo's of the course I took....

Played there 18mths ago and like you quite enjoyed it, didnt think it was spectacular, but still enjoyed it.

I shot a 83 with three birdies which playing off 11 I was quite chuffed with. It cost me £10 in total for me and two of my mates! But would I have paid £165, no. If I was to pay for the round I would say £60-£80 is about right.

Conditions were perfect when I played there with very little wind, but the greens were like lightening and quite hard to read.
