Played today and managed to knock it round in 66 blows (-4) however I did have a little bit of assistance. Firstly I borrowed our assistant pro's Skycaddie and found it absolutely amazing, it was a great help and that was round my home course which I play and know well! I just found that the doubt and club selection headaches were wiped away with a glace at the screen.

For example, our 13th is 350 off of yellows, OOB down the right and trees left with a burn about 220 yards from the tee cutting the fairway. It was playing slightly into the wind and I hit 2 iron which went about 175 yards leaving 175 into the heart of the green. I was only about 5 yards behind our 150 marker yet trusting the GPS I hit the 2 iron again to pin high. I wouldnt have hit the 2 iron in a million years from that position!

Finally on the first tee I went into my bag, pulled out a ball and it happened to be the faithful Z-STAR.

Oh, and a Skycaddie 2.5 was ordered after my round! I used the 5.0 today but was told by the pro that if he were to buy it again he wouldnt bother with the coloured screen.

Craw, good to hear you liked it.

I was playing in an Scratch event at the weekend that didn't allow them so veryone was refering to yardage charts and by christ did it take a long time out there.

Folk were looking to see where the silver birch was then stepping out the yardage from there then looking again to see the green depth and calculating pin yardage etc etc etc....slow slow slow!!

Why oh why people cannot see the advantages of these gadgets is beyond me!

Can't remember Craw - were you for, against or on the fence on the GPS debate?

Either way, this is a story I've heard many times with GPS. Wouldn't be without mine - saved a par the other week only because I knew the distance to the green from another fairway!

BTW - great scoring Craw keep it going - you'll walk the Meet next year at this rate.

I may be wrong but I dont believe that the GPS is classed as a range finder. Laser measuring devices are range finders, I think!

Great news. You've got to be pleased with that score. I've been pro SC for ages on here although if I was buying again I'd look at others on the market but it proves what I have said all along about it taking the doubt away. It always amazes me how GP can make you realise just how wrong you can be on a course you play regularly. I had a shot on 18 which I'd have sworn was no more than 130 yards. When I looked at SC it was showing 144 and as it was over water I'm glad I clubbed up!

As for the Z star, I like them. Prefer them to the old URC and URS

Its still a means of determining the distance other than looking at a yardage chart or pacing.
The sooner the R&A get their backsides off the fence and make them totally legal the better.

Its been allowed by the SGU so why do individual clubs act like eejits and so no to their use????

Well its the R&A's bat, ball and wicket - if they say you can only use them under certain circumstances then that's that. They're able to outlaw certain clubs and even ways of playing a shot - it would be the end of the R&A if someone took up the case and won - they wouldn't be able to make any rules again.

Was a bit sceptical of them at first ,thought they were a bit of a gimmick to be honest as my course has the distances on the sprinkler heads. It wasn't till i played in the Forfar Open i could have done with one due to some blind second shots and unsure of the distance.
Anyway played at Murcar Links yesterday and my mate has one we got to a par 3 it said 145 yards the pin was at the back the skycaddie said 163 slightly into the wind hit 5 iron to 5 feet , like thecraw would never have hit the club for thet distance so a convert here, and by the way it was a Z Star as well

I believe that they do and its up to clubs to introduce local rules saying yah or nah!

I am usually wrong though!! :D :D

Wow Craw that is class. 66 is another life! Well done that man!

Great news on the SC front, our club now allows them in comps, so much quicker!

Some shooting TC. I got them permitted at Shotts last year when I convinced the Pro that the clubs reluctance in allowing them was restricting his trading potential and he put some ressure on the committee and they changed their tune and the Pro sold 30 last year.

I didnt get any commission.
