Rory: a fair weather golfer?

If you read that as if it were him speaking, I see it coming across less serious than it reads to be honest.
The reporter has added words like bemoans, and added sentences in there which make it sound more of a moan than it actually was, afterall, he did make the cut.

How many of us have walked off a course after 18 holes and not enjoyed it? Me, I have done a few times, once was Castlerock (one of the best courses in NI apparently). Has it put me off links golf? not on your nelly.

Anyone found any of the interviews from Donald and Westwoe et al? bet they wern't all about the joys of the Summer weather either.

This. He says what he thinks and wears his heart on his sleeve the majority of the time and was light hearted about it all. He has a personality! Can't fault him for that. He hardly went about it the same way Bubba did the other week. He's just saying the game he's perfected doesn't suit thos conditions. He may have grown up on the links of Ireland but he's spent alot of time in the US and has developed his game to become deadly accurate with his irons. He doesn't want to mess with this formula to force an Open win. I get it. As he gets older I'm sure he'll grow wiser and learn from all these windy Open Championships but he's confident with the game he has that he can win tournaments. And can win the Open if he gets a good draw with the weather.

I'd rather his express his opinion than a robot that answers questions exactly the same in every interview/press conference.

Real champions can adapt to any conditions and any surface.
Whats the point of these players spending thousands of pounds on mental coaches,at the end of the day were humans and we moan about everything.
What i cant fathom is how anyone can win a grand slam of majors if you cant play on all surfaces and in all conditions.
Take for example Tennis,no one thought Roger Fedderer would beat Nadal ever on clay, but he did because he adapted, and Nadal would never win Wimbledon because he was no good on grass, but he adapted.
Being able to adapt, and then embrace those conditions makes champions.
After his Major win everyone was raving about Mclroy, however imo hes just another golfer who has a chance to win a major, and he certainly needs to change his attitude to do that.

PJ he hits a high ball, for him to hit a low stinger would require a lot of practice for what is in effect, one or two weeks a year and might affect his usual game.
He has had his back garden turned into a fantastic practice area which includes links type bunkers.
I think his plan is to play his usual game but have the arsenal of links short game should he need it.

BTW tennis players rarely have to contend with rain,30mph winds and waterproof jackets.

I don't see anything wrong with what he said at all. His comments obviously came out of frustration at the weather but I think what he said was correct and that his decision not to change his game is probably (though not definitely) correct too.

He basically understands that with his extremely high ball flight, he is going to struggle (relatively... I mean he did make the cut!) at the Open when the wind gets up. His high ball flight is obviously great for the other three majors, and the PGA tour, so his decision to not try and lower his ball flight could well end up being the right one. Look at Kaymers recent failed attempt at changing his natural fade to a draw so that his game was better suited to the Masters....

I don't think Rory's comments belittled the Open at all as I think you can tell by his frustration how badly he wants to win it. I just think he understands that the tournament is not best suited to his game, and so he might need a week of good weather and less wind one year to stand a good chance at winning
