Rooney 100caps

Disappointments? If you're one of the England fans dumb enough to think they had a chance of winning any recent tournaments then yes.

For the stick he gets I bet he wishes he never bothered rushing back from injury for the tournaments! Hasn't played well but post 2004 England have been average at best as a team.

Disappointments in terms of the players own performance as opposed to the team falling to win

Is that not true if every England player since him in 2004?

Seems odd that everyone rounds on him, I know why you do it though......

Yes it can be true - certainly isn't the only one to disappoint

Well i am not a fan but he has done better then any of us on this forum , a good player that is looking better , maybe his best England years are yet to come , judge him when he is done and not before ..........:)

If we are not allowed to judge people because they have achieved more than us this place would be very quiet

It's not a crime to offer an informed opinion on a sportsman or women

He will undoubtedly break the record and to be fair since the captaincy and in the England games this season there is a more positive side of him coming through so maybe he's changing. He certainly has a few good seasons left in him and with the plethora of young and talented players emerging we may yet see the best of Rooney on the bigger stages

Time for someone else to defend Wayne Rooney.

Firstly I do agree that he has had some poor performances, for his standards. Nobody can be that good or great all the time.

I've said before on here, any England team, or Man Utd, are weaker without him. Also,if every England player put as much effort, desire and passion in his game as he does, we might just of had a World or European Cup to our name.

Let's not forget there is so much more to his game than just scoring goals. His work rate (how many times have we seen him still chasing the ball down at 89-90 minutes) his goal assists and passing ability.

I don't see any other young player coming through that's any where near his all round game and goal scoring ability.

Let's get behind him while he's still able and the best England have.

Here's the truth.

When he first started, Rooney was touted as England's world beater. It happens a lot with England over history - Hoddle, Mariner, Owen, Gerrard and now Barkley and Sterling. What always happens is that they become very good players at club level but at international level, they are just 'good', and that's all.

None, or very, very few of our stars over the last 20 years would get into the main international teams such as France, Italy, Brazil, Argentina, Spain or Germany. Even some of the second level teams they wouldn't get in.

Work rate is a given for all players, so for me that's a non-starter. It's the skill and influence above and beyond working hard that defines a great, world class player.

I can't imagine Bobby Charlton or Gary Lineker mouthing off into the camera after a shockingly bad 0-0 draw with the mighty Algeria in a world cup, it's not all about how you play that makes you great but also how you conduct yourself.

Can't imagine Rooney taking a **** on the pitch and wiping his hands on the grass tbf.

He was ill - not really a slur on his character.

Zero bookings at any level and believe Rooney might have had more red cards than anyone else for England

Indeed.

Mariner, who touted him as a world beater?

Let's see, off the top of my head I can name 4 players from the past that would get into International teams:

Gascoine - Shearer - Scholes - Sheringham.

Agreed, work rate is a given for all players, but my point was that over recent years not everybody has had the same desire and work rate that Rooney has always showed.

I would rather talk about the present and the future with England players. And from what I saw on Wednesday night against Scotland, there is certainly improvement and hope for the future.

England are forever looking toward the future without ever learning from the past.
