Rooney 100caps

Looks like he will have the goals record soon as he got 2 more today and as for the most caps , looks like he get that too , Peter Shilton had 125 but there was a time when he played every other game with Ray Clemence , would have had a lot more if that policy was not used , Rooney seems to be playing better for England lately

Vastly overrated imho, as someone else said, his record in world cup finals and big games is very poor, goals against Slovenia and Scotland does not make you great. He will never be fit to lace Charlton's, Lineker's, Greaves' or Shearer's boots. Don't forget also that it is much easier to reach 100 caps these days as they play a lot more games than Bobby Charlton's era.

As an outsider the downer England fans have in Rooney is quite amusing.

So he's not "world class", why is that such a problem!? He is probably going to end up as England's leading scorer, Man Utds leading scorer, record caps etc. not a bad career really!

England have been quite a distance behind to top country's for about 10 years now, it's more unrealistic expectation levels that cause the problem IMO.

I think Rooney is superb, probably not hit the heights he could have, but those heights are Messi/Ronaldo levels.

He's been surrounded by alot of mediocrity for England, or injured at tournaments or played for a coach who's useless.

Always find it funny when English fans don't rate him higher than the likes of Lineker or Shearer...he's got more medals than both of them combined at club level I'd guess and they played in superior national teams.

And I really don't like complimenting English footballers

Is that true? I was thinking the same but without any facts to back up the assumption. The European Championship began in 1960 and there was also the Home Internationals every year. Do England play more friendlies now than they used to?

What's that got to do with how good a player is? Look at the teams Shearer and Lineker played for in comparison to Rooney.

Because Rooney has been touted as world class and mentioned in comparison to Messi and Ronaldo.

By who? English media perhaps?

If you're daft enough to take that in then yes he is overrated as he's nowhere near them.

Not being on the level of 2 of the best players ever to have played the game doesn't, or shouldn't, detract from his achievements though.

Can't quite believing I'm defending England's top scorer and caps holder (in all probability) to English people!!!

Rooney has been and still is Englands best player.
He has scored 46 goals in poor England teams.
Messi is world class for Barcelona but is not regarded as good by Argentina standards.
There was plenty of chances to be had last night by the other strikers and wide men, however
as usual Rooney was in the right place at the right time and his second was strikers instint.

Been living down here too long - you've become ENGLISHIFIED!:)

The World Cup had 16 teams in it in 66, there are double that now because tv demands more football. Also you only have to look at how many more European teams there are now for qualifying, how many countries has the old USSR broken up into, or Yugoslavia?

I don't doubt that you're right but I was wondering how many opportunities were available to Charlton to play for England. So being a bit of a geek I've trawled Wikipaedia and come up with the following: Bobby Charlton played for England from 1958 to 1970 and could have played 132 games. Wayne Rooney has played for England since 2003 and since his debut he could have played 142 games. England played 10.15 games p.a. in Charlton's era and have played 11.8 games p.a. in Rooney's era. So yes there are more games these days but possibly not as many as we may have thought and 100 caps is still a pretty good achievement.

Rooney played in teams with Campbell, Cole, Neville, Terry, Ferdinand, Scholes, Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard...

Exactly, mediocrity....

The best team he played in was Euro 2004 (comedy goalie apart), how did that go......?

He got injured I believe in the quarters before they got knocked out on pens to Portugal

After playing out of his skin and scoring 4 goals in a couple of games. Yes.

Anyway, no idea what I'm doing defending England's best player to England fans!! Off for some Haggis, Neeps and Tatties to redress my natural balance!

He did play very well then but since that tournament think it's been nothing but red cards , suspensions and disappointments

Disappointments? If you're one of the England fans dumb enough to think they had a chance of winning any recent tournaments then yes.

For the stick he gets I bet he wishes he never bothered rushing back from injury for the tournaments! Hasn't played well but post 2004 England have been average at best as a team.
