Replacing 5 iron

How about a Mizuno MP H5 - hybrid iron ?

Or the new Titliest 712U replacement - TPM I think it's called ?

Both likes irons but play like hybrids a very forgiving ?

I got a 24 degree ping g10 this summer. It's brilliant. Good flight, fantastic out of the rough (I would say that this is the most significant difference). I can also play knock downs etc.

It's been fantastic. I even started looking for a 28deg (the shame).

The design is unlike a lot of modern hybrids - it's quite shaped at the bottom, rather than flat, which helps in the dodgy stuff. A short shaft as well, so easy to control.

If it works why not? If anyone is struggling with a five iron, then why not and as you point out, it has a lot of versatility

How many have ditched a 5 iron for a 5 hybrid?

If so has it been a benefit and what clubs would be recommended
I did, had no confidence in hitting my 5 iron either off the tee or ground, used a 24 degree Titleist 915 Hybrid changed to 25.5, was fitted for the 716 AP1's this week and tge 5 Iron plus 4 Iron gave gone back in the bag.
The Hybrid definitely launched higher and a lot more versatile out of the rough.

I recently replaced my 5i with G30 26 Hybrid, easier to hit, more consitant, good out of the semi rough and longer than my 5i, i was finding that there was not a lot of difference between my 6i and 5i.

I play a couple of links courses close by so some time I but the 5i back in the bag because the 5h has a high ball flight and therefore does not run like the 5i

I have a Taylor Made RBZ Stage 2 5-hybrid that hits the ball about the same distance as my 4-iron, on the rare occasions that I hit the latter well. The 5-hybrid is much easier to hit than the 4-iron which has been ditched, so I normally carry both a 5-hybrid and a 5-iron. :)

Thanks for the replys gents, I play a lot with a 12h/c and he has a 5 hybrid, and his thinking is it has a short shaft and is more constant than his 5 iron, so I had a few shots with it and i found it was easier to hit than a 5 iron.

So will look into some of the recommendations with a view to buying one.

Playing devils advocate here, but if you can't hit a 5 iron off the Tee or the ground, shouldn't you be thinking about lessons rather than hybrids? can understand with a 3 iron and possibly a 4 but the 5 iron is only a mid iron. I couldn't consider going out with out at least 4-PW. It seems like soon the whole bag will have hybrid alternatives!

I added a 24deg to my bag, but not to replace my 5 iron as I like hitting my long irons. I bought it as the 1st at my club is a Par 5 and if I go into the fluffy stuff I wanted something to get me out and up into wedge territory for my 3rd shot. I was previously chunking out a 7/8 iron and still required similar to get up onto the green. Yes I may have an overlap in distances but the clubs do two different jobs for me.

Fair point, but it's not always about lessons, mine was purely confidence and in my head, if it was anything but on the fairway I couldn't hit it, even off the tee. 6 months of switching to the hybrid has now been reversed and 5 Iron is back in the bag.

I have a 22° "4" hybrid.
It's supposed to replace a 4 iron
But it doesn't....it more replaces a 3 iron.
It has a longer, lighter shaft so I'll swing it faster, it launches high so will carry further.
So it should be a 3 iron replacement.
It leaves a gap between it and my 5 iron

A 5 iron replacement hybrid should really be about 27° or more to match distances otherwise you stand a chance of gapping issues.
A way to get around this would be to use a steel shaft in a hybrid. Then it would more closely match the corresponding iron.
I reckon the vast majority of people would hit a hybrid much further than the corresponding iron...assuming a decent strike on both.

sometimes age is a factor, a couple of the old boys that play after our roll up have 5 and 6 hybrids, both are still single fig, but just don't hit the ball very far anymore, these have allowed them to stay competitive into their 70's

That would be my take too. A five iron shouldn't be that difficult to hit

Really!! Martin you've got a blog all about your struggles with golf and issues with chipping methods etc if any one would understand some people struggle with different parts of the game it would've been you!!
