Assuming you mean free relief, the first was not legitimate. Rule 16.2 is explicitly for a dangerous animal situation.

Would it be semantic since 16.2 dangerous animal, uses same free relief (16.1b) as 16.1a, relief from abnormal course condition ?

So in @AussieKB two scenarios, it would be free relief using 16.1b from the interference (danger) of an abnormal course condition (crumbling cliff edge) and also free Relief for Dangerous Animal Condition (wasps nest) also using the same 16.1b ?

I played a course in Queensland that had a "don't look for yer ball in there mate" local rule because of snakes!😁😁
When I played a course in Victoria that the locals had carved out of the bush (Grampians GC) I got the same advice - if I should hit my ball off the fairway I should not go looking for it in the undergrowth…spiders and snakes…I took the hint and kept my ball on the fairway. I note in passing that playing on their oiled-sand greens was certainly different…😀

And when playing another course in Victoria and surrounded by kangaroos (often lying or standing only feet away) - I did ponder, when does a kangaroo change from being a harmless grazing animal a bit like a funny looking sheep, into a dangerous animal that might do you damage…?

Have taken relief twice because of danger, once at Barton on Sea where the course was close to the cliff face and it was falling into the sea, think they built new holes further in land since then.

Second time was in Thailand when there was a wasp nest over my ball, luckily my caddy forewarned me.
Lyme Regis has this problem over the years, they moved the OB further and further in land away from the cliff.
One new hole has been built in the middle of the course and another has had /having a new green built 50 yards to the right of the old one so the fairway can also also be be moved.

Seeing recent photos of the cliff falls along that section I reckon Axe cliff or Bridport may well be doing something similar in future years.

We have Roo's on our course 24/7, plus the odd emu makes an appearance as do snakes.....

Glad to hear you played on sand greens......it takes a bit of time to come to grip with them.

They smell…the greens not the kangaroos…they might smell also if I got too close…though any closer than I was when playing I’d be shaking hands with them.

Anyone in Melbourne area might well consider the hour and half drive to Anglesea GC for a fun experience.🦘🦘🦘🦘 Playing in the bush at the Grampians GC, Dunkeld, Vic is also a great experience….where I played the sand greens.

Which of these 4 conditions apply?

Abnormal Course Condition

Any of these four defined conditions:
Animal Hole, Ground Under Repair, Immovable Obstruction, or Temporary Water.

GUR must be defined of course except for a couple of exceptions which don't include a cliff edge.
The Committee should define the area as a NPZ (GUR or PA as appropriate).

We have a local rule for tree roots, of which there are many, on the fairway or within 4 club lengths of the general area cut to fairway height. Free relief but only if it interferes with stroke, not stance. To prevent injuries, a different kind of danger.

Highest my heart rate has ever been on a golf course. Playing in USA, had been told of alligators in the water penalty areas, lots of bullrushes etc.
Playing a ball lying a yard from the water's edge, sudden huge disturbance in the bullrushes coming towards me.

It was a baby deer that I had startled in the shallows. Code brown.

We had one in Florida .
Guy hit his tee shot about 12” from an alligator.
He took relief from the “dangerous animal “ so free.
We found out in the clubhouse it was made of fibreglass and was just a novelty for hotel guests to see.

We tried to give him a 2 shot penalty but he wasn’t having it 😂😂😳
He then complained he’d lost his ball for nothing as he didn’t go and get it.

An allowable local rule.

We too have the rule.

Most courses in Florida the woods are red staked penalty areas so a 1 shot pen and drop.
Very sensible as there are some very nasty things in there.

I may be mistaken but I am sure that my old course allowed free relief if a ball landed near a stag, especially in rutting season.
