When I played a course in Victoria that the locals had carved out of the bush (Grampians GC) I got the same advice - if I should hit my ball off the fairway I should not go looking for it in the undergrowth…spiders and snakes…I took the hint and kept my ball on the fairway. I note in passing that playing on their oiled-sand greens was certainly different…😀

And when playing another course in Victoria and surrounded by kangaroos (often lying or standing only feet away) - I did ponder, when does a kangaroo change from being a harmless grazing animal a bit like a funny looking sheep, into a dangerous animal that might do you damage…?
When it gets hit by a golf ball.
