Reliance on a Golf Range Finder during a round

I recently upgraded from Gamegolf classic to Gamegolf Live and its really improved my use of GPS on my watch

I have had an apple watch since day 1.. I got it because it wasn't just a watch but it would work with my Golfshot at the time.

I then switched to Hole 19 on it.. both work well but the thing I found is you need to enter a score to move the GPS onto the next hole which in the winter can be fiddly if its raining or you just have forgotten

anyways Gamegolf live is BRILLIANT .. before a round I will set up my gamegolf. instantly works now instead of "waiting to load" and then it auto opens the gamegolf app on my watch to give me yardage and when I get to the next hole it opens up the correct yardage rather than being stuck on the last hole

Score also goes in automatically and because I get a read out on my watch I don't forget to tag anymore as I can see it say 5 with 2 putts so I am like yes that's what I played so no need to add

I still have my Laser I use now and again when I really want to know exactly how far.. for example when on temp greens when the GPS is wrong

Yes indeed - three times mentioning that I didn't use one - but my obduracy in the past was actually in respect of their being used in internal club comps. But even on that I admitted defeat. Still needs a local rule though so clearly still some debate about :)

And do be honest I don't think a range finder would help me that much on my own track - I know it pretty much inside out and we have many accurate distance markers down the middle of every fairway from 250yds in, that said - one just might - I am not closed to the idea.

you don't want to get closer to the flag and shoot lower scores then??

your loss;)

I'm not that consistent with my irons. Also we have red, yellow and white flags for front, middle, back, and our greens are small in any case. Hit the middle of a green and you'll not have a long putt. And I know that 10 of my paces is about 8yards.

The requirement for a LR will almost certainly change shortly.

Accurate distance markers down the middle of a fairway just add to delays (loads of walking) for those, less fortunate players, who find themselves using the rest of the course 🤔

:) Indeed I am then perhaps fortunate that I usually keep it on the neatly cut stuff.

Mine ran out after 4 holes last week and I managed fine until 16. Using the fairway markers, I thought I was right in between clubs and was struggling to decide. FC gave me a yardage, which confirmed in my mind the need to go up a club. Stuck it on the back edge of the green and rolled in the birdie putt.

That's a microcosm of how reliant I am on it. Most of the time it's just comfort, or additional info, but now and again it makes a difference and might save me a shot.

As someone who struggles to gauge distance accurately without "help", such devices have changed my game totally. I too would be lost without one, especially on unfamiliar courses.

I might not be able to hit each shot the required distance, or even always in the right direction, but at least I know the distance and so have a good chance of selecting the appropriate club (although wind and terrain can sometimes make me get that wrong!).
