After much debate I decided to rejoin Thornton Golf Club today, they had all my details from my previous time there in 2009 so it was all pretty straightforward.

My handicap in 2009 was 7.9 (going upwards) and after a short chat the club decided to start me on 10.4 (will more than likely be 10.5 come Sunday afternoon :o). Some may say this is generous however I feel that if I put in 3 cards that figure would be closer to 14 or 15 given that I have only been back playing for less than 2 months.

Turns out it is nearly 3 years since my last competitive round so looking forward to the challenge of Sundays medal.

Aim for the end of season - a single figure playing handicap, loads of work to be done on the short game so realistically will aiming for the single figure in 12 months time. :fore:

Good news mate. Mind I did not know you could get your handicap back after that length of time. Without 3 cards?

It is more of a preliminary handicap to allow me to play in medals, it will be reviewed after 3 cards, however given my previous was 7.9 they did not want me putting in 3 cards and getting a higher handicap. If I have 3 high cards it will stay around the same mark (maybe go up by 1 or 2 max), a couple of lower rounds will have me back down to 8. I feel it is fair although I know I will struggle initially.

No problem from me. Just wondered thats all. As I have a lapsed H/c. Ok from a bit longer 4 years I think. Told them on joining, told to put cards in and take it from there.

I did wonder where the handicap stood officially I have had this scenario twice over the years and although the previous handicap level has been disclosed the 3 cards submitted were taken for a newly issued h/cap.

As expected + .1 today, a gross 94 albeit in difficult conditions. Enjoyed it, even though the golf was no good. 2 more cards to confirm the handicap, hopefully at least 10 shots less next time round.
