I have never had a club regripped before.

Just bought an old putter (£20) for curiosity's sake, but considering buying a Ping Greyhawk putter because I LOVE the grip on it.

I have seen that I can buy the Ping grip online. Question is, if I take it to American Golf or any other pro, will they fit the Ping grip on my cheapo putter and can they get it to feel the same as the Greyhawk? Or does the shaft make the difference?

Yes they can fit it. Whether it feels the same I would doubt as the strike will feel different no doubt.
Shafts on putters dont make much difference IMO as its more about the face construction and the head shape/weight.

The grip will probably feel the same as pitter grips tend to be thicker.

Do I then not need to buy tape and glue? Then do I need a vice etc etc.

Seems a bit of a faff for the sake of a fiver.

Tape and a solvent like whitespirit. No vice is needed. A lot of places will supply you a strip of 2" tape with the grip if you just ask when ordering.
Its a handy thing to learn as a fiver becomes a lot more when you need 7 or 8 irons doing.

Whenever I buy a grip I ask for some with it, or ask your Pro for some usually happy enough to give it out for free.

No need for a vice either, like said above once you learn to do it you will save money from the skill in future.

Plus nothing like knowing you achieved something

It is easy. Good prep is key. Mark the centre spot of the old grip before you take it off and you can't go wrong.
The tape is solvent activated so no, not standard B&Q fare.
Stanley knife, tape and white spirit is all the gear you need.

Can you explain this bit?

Also- all the vids and websites advise you to use 'grip tape solvent'..... I take it this is just white spirit?

The grips have a small marker on them at the bottom (and on at the top too) for alignment. To ensue your new grip is aligned as theold one you should mark the shaft where it is normally wrap a piece of masking tape around the shaft 1/2" below the grip and mark with a pen. This means you know whaere the alignment mark was.

Yes, grip solvent is just a way to sell white spirit for more money IMO.
