You roll the dice buying them. I bought a load and most of them were the genuine article. A friend of mine bought 100 and they were all rubbish. He binned the lot, they weren't even any good as practice balls!
It amazes me that its even worthwhile faking these things.

Given the choice I'd probably opt for lake balls and take the reduced performance (having been submerged) as the chances of them being the genuine article seem higher. In reality I wouldn't use lake balls or refurbs and if I was hacking would opt for a mid range ball like the NXT or AD333 instead of the normal Pro V etc

I bought 100 'A' grade AD333's last summer off eBay from a big powerseller so I thought they'd be fine.
What I found was they seemed to wear down really easily. I bought a sleeve of new AD333's to compare wear after a few holes and the new ball seemed great but the 'A' grade ball just cut up far too easily.
Made me think they weren't the genuine article.
Distance was a little less but they felt very similar on impact.
As it's already been said, you take your chance with refurbs... I won't buy them again. Only genuine new balls for me now.

The first AD333's did wear like older balls, the newer ones are far better.

The sort of wear was quite bad. The writing was 80% off the ball by the 9th hole (suprisingly not lost it by the 9th
) not sure if it was suppost to be that much with the early editions of the AD333's??Good balls though. I use them and the Srixon soft feels as I like the touch around the greens.

I've used ProV lake balls during the winter as I don't think the performance difference is that much but these days I'll just use balls I know to be new. Fortunately I win enough vouchers to keep myself in ew balls.
I used a refurb once for about 2 holes. I hit it with the driver, then hit a real one (not as well) and the real ball went about 60 yards further.
'nuff said.

firstly... Are you a bandit to win vouchers for balls all season??
secondly... I can imagine your face when you've hit the refurb out of the sweet spot and then you hit a proper ball not as well and it's carried past the refurb...
I'd be sending it towards the nearest lake never to be seen again!!

I bought some once years ago, I didn't use them long enough to get in that state but they weren't good. Unfotunately, as with most golf equipment, there are so many fakes the only way to be sure is to buy the real thing from a reputable golf shop\website.

Don't do 'refurb' balls as the finish is usually rubbish!
Of the ones i've picked up they look like they've been sprayed with car paint then varnished with a brush!....awful!

i bought refinished prov 1s from direct golf. for about 15 dozen. they wore well only problem was i lost about 50 of them last season. 
still got a few left. but have moved on to new real wilson staff px3 soft. i get slightly more distance of tee but slightly less grip on green

Was that a range ball? I'll never buy any of these, christ.
A playing partner regularly buys these and they seem to perform ok, but the scuff up exceptionally quickly. never seen them to be orange underneath but its not worth the risk is it.
Can't believe there's money to be made from faking them though!!

no, i meant, the yellowish colouring underneath the white paint - it looks like those old range balls that used to be used. And that the old range ball had been painted up like a ProV
