I doubt any pro shop in the country would object to somebody walking in and spending money there. Be a bit weird if they did.


I went to Turnberry and couldn't afford the green fees so I bought a towel and a scorecard holder instead. And a £24 club sandwich.

When we played there my wife got a hole in one inthe Ailsa, we decided not to buy everyone in the clubhouse a drink as we didn’t have a mortgage broker with us.
We did buy drinks for the 4 ball ahead who saw it go in and congratulated her.
The club did give us a lovely signed certificate, which was a nice touch.

Not quite the same. The OP is asking about just popping into the shop, not watching or playing.

I know some people who played Morfontaine in France, an exclusive private club. They went into the Pro Shop and asked to buy a crested shirt, but they were asked if they were members, when they said they weren’t the answer was no.
French golf clubs can be odd though, for example quite a few top ones always close one day a week and the Pro Shops close for the month of August.

Muirfield does have a shop and could not see any reason why you wouldnt be able to visit and buy an overpriced polo

Just park in the garages and walk around to the shop in the main building.

At Royal St George’s there are two sections - one for members only and one for everyone else

I’ve got a Cap from Pebble Beach, bought back for me as a present by a friend who knew I played Golf.

Should I of refused it and come across as ungrateful to someone who thought they were doing a decent thing?

Crikey! All I said was I (as in me, and me alone) didn't see the point of buying a memento from a course I hadn't played and had just visited the shop. To me, it seems a bit of a vanity thing and not something I would do. This doesn't mean that others can't do it, it is not illegal and not something I want to see banned.

I wouldnt call it a pro shop - more a merchandise and gift shop. (I played it about 4 years ago)

Head Pro or Golf Director I seem to remember - nice memento.
Slightly annoying as I had stiffed my shot into the green and she holed out to win the hole, I think it’s the 4th….quite easy off the reds!
