Anyone out there care to convince me why members of the Armed Forces should receive a reduction on their membership to a golf club or on green fees for that matter.

Why should I pay £500 a year and they get it for £250??

Go on....someone convince me please.

Hmmmm, the actual percentage of our armed forces that are 'shot at' isn't really that large. Some Rupert who pushes a pen rather than the sword would get the same discount.

I much prefer the monthly payment method, therefore if they are called to go somewhere sandy then they do not have to pay.

Flexibility is the key and more clubs are seeing this.

Because they get paid not very much for the pleasure of getting shot at to enable us all to live and play golf on our miserable little island full of moaning gits.

That, and the fact that for most of the year, a lot of them are not at home.

I played golf for a couple of years when I started with a bloke who was bandmaster in the army. He still had to go on tours and spent a lot of time away from home. Dam good at golf as well.

As much respect as I have for anyone that wants to join up, I dont see why they should get concessions for everything (like some folks would have implemented).
Bread, milk etc is still the same so why make the luxuries more affordable to them? If something is cost reduced to some then the rest make up for it.

To me in the modern world, the police, ambulance staff and fire service guys are under more pressure more of the time and may be more entitled. That said, none of these jobs are exactly breadline minimum wage.

oh... and employees of the NHS get serious discount at many many places that you would not imagine - including at some golf courses.

Is that also wrong?

About armed forces being under paid is far from it. When everyone else is getting cut they are not along with all there discounts they get also. As much as I admire the job they do and respect them they are not that hard done to.

Yes they do 6 months deployment but they know this before signing up that there is every chance they could be sent away.

Got a good friend who in the armed force who laughs about it as he been away to Afghan for 6 months and now doing recruiting up here and has been for over 2 years now and he earns more doing this in 6 months than what he would being away on deployment. He only works when he feels like it rest of the time you guessed is on the golf course which he gets at a discount rate due to being in the forces.

You don't need to be on the front line for a discount....you can be a kitchen hand working in a kitchen here at home at RAF so and so and get it.

The only alarming noise he would have to deal with is the noise of the sausages spitting.

I am not overly fussed by it. I have worked places where we have got discount for different things whether it be theme park half price or half price gym membership. All swings in roundabouts.

I know nhs get discounts at most places. Idea of discounts is to get them to join. If they pay £250 and then cant use it the club has made money where as if they wouldnt pay the full amount and only play once they get £20 green fee.

Dont see the issue with armed forces getting a discount. I can certainly see the point that the ones who dont go on tour still get the same benefits but compared to our american counterparts, our soldiers and their families arent helped when they return injured without limbs or even dead. Soo many times their forgotten about so a discount at a golf club is small sacrifice for them risking their lives. Just my opinion.

Lucky you don't live in the US then, military folks get discount on pretty much everything - even Ping give a discount on their clubs.

If you walk into a Starbucks or McD's in uniform, 90% of the time you will get your food\drink for free.

Don't really have a problem with it myself, as I think most people in the military deserve it. Yes, you might get odd pen pushing officers earning a fortune, but mostly you get people earning between £15-30k, for hard and dangerous work.

Lots of private companies offer discounts for staff. For example, many employers get a corporate rate for their staff in gyms. This is subsidised by all the full price paying gym members.
Not really any different in my eyes.

If anyone thinks the discount really is a steal, and the pay is not that low, instead of complaining, they could always sign up.

I think it's great that the armed forces get a discount on golf club fees and I would support them getting a better rate on just about anything. They are our front line of defence and could die doing their jobs. I know a lot of people in the military and they are fantastic people that deserve the support of the nation.

What I find most surprising about this thread is that it would be posted in the first place and similarly, why anyone would feel aggrieved about the fact that our soldiers get a discount on something.

I think you all sound extremely mean spirited, petty and avaricious to think that this is an issue that is even worth debate, never mind actually supporting the argument.

We should support our armed forces in any way that we can in my view.

Should Police,Ambulance,Fire, Coastguard etc not get the same treatment?

All can easily 'die doing their jobs' while keeping us all safe....

So what are you saying:

a) The people above also take risks so should get discount?

b) The people above also take risks, so the forces shouldn't get discount?

I am asking the for brigade their opinion on it.

I am asking to be convinced so convince me on the merits.

Well said that man!

Dodger, even though we've not met, I like what I know of you and find your unswerving stance on subjects to be generally a good read.

I think you are wrong on this one though. You sound incredibly petty with your original post. It sounds like a truck load of sour grapes. What skin is it off your nose if a soldier pays a lower rate than you? Are you that tight that you would begrudge it, should the situation arise?

And to answer your point, I would support our emergency services getting a discount at their local club. The RNLI volunteers too! And nurses! Definitely nurses! :p
