Recommend me a Hybrid and a Gap Wedge

Re-jigging my bag and looking for a 3 hybrid and a gap wedge (has to be 50 degrees to fill the gap between my 45 PW and 54 SW).

Budget is about £150 in total. Really looking to get a good quality hybrid and a slightly more budget GW.

Any recommendations appreciated
 
I'm not a fan of hybrids, IMO I'd spend more on the wedge. I think you will use the wedge more often

I got a 50* Vokey sm4 wedge a few weeks back and I love it although abit expensive @ £90

I use a md seve icon hybrid 18* & although a budget line it's as good as any other I tried ie: tm ping

I'm sure you could pick one up second hand for around £40
 
Try the letters wedge at direct golf, the will bend it to 50 for you. £50 leaving £100 for a MD hybrid (£80) and a dozen velocity balls

I have to say, i probably use my rubbish old hybrid more than any other club in my bag at the moment. Off the tee on Par 3's/short par 4's, long approach shots when it's sat up in the rough. Hence my thinking.

Cleveland mashie hybrid £69 in AG at the moment but I got another £5 knocked off so £64. Leaves you £85 for a gap wedge.
 
I'm of thought try to find matching gap wedge then go and have a play with a few hybrids to see what you look the like of big choice of shape and styles.
 
Just make sure you loft match the hybrid to your top iron loft and the gap to your bottom iron loft or you could end up with an unbalanced bag. I carry a 3 hybrid and a 3 iron, one is a new TM the other is an old mizuno. If I went straight from a mizuno 4 iron to a TM 3 hybrid the loft difference would be 6*!!!!

You will find both clubs a great addition to your bag. My 3h and GW are both "go to" clubs in a variety of situations.

There are so many good quality clubs to choose from in both categories and it will be very much a personal choice so I can't recommend a particular club for you, you have to try them. However here are a few thoughts on what to think about.

As above do you want to match either club to what you already have? You can match the GW either to your PW or SW if they are diffferent.

For the hybrid, what do you want? A high flight to give you a soft landing on 200 yard approach shots or something low flying for penetrating shots in the wind and off the tee? Shaft choice will be a factor here as well. It isn't just about club heads and lofts. Some shafts will result in a higher flight than others. Shafts also affect accuracy. I have a steel shaft in my 3h, nothing special, but it feels really stable.

For the GW, will it be used just for a particular distance or do you want something you will use for a variety of chips and pitches around the green? If the latter make sure you get something that you will feel confident with on those kinds of shots, e.g. you might pefer something with a bigger GI type head or a more compact classic wedge head depending on how it will be used.

Do try out the clubs if you can. Having a hit with a friend's clubs sometimes helps if you can't demo a good range in the shop.

I really lie the Wilson TW9 wedges and I'm after a 50deg myself. I've tried cleveland wedges but there was something I didn't like about them which I cant remember. I also have Ram Tour Grind X wedges which I REALLY like but not quite as much as the TW9's

I use Yonex driver, 3 wood and hybrid and found the XC+3 hybrid to fly straight off the face. I've tried TM burners before but found that they were less forgiving for me while at the range
 
My vote would go to the Mizzy MP CLK hybrid and either the TM XFT or Mizzy MP R12 Wedge.

You should be able to find both brand new and within budget :thup:
 
If you are on a budget then MD wedges are pretty hard to beat. As for hybrids, I am happy with my Mizunon JPX800, they are very competitively priced and pretty forgiving.
 
Check out Dunluce Golf on ebay. They have MD 50* wedges. The older Seve ones with Razor grooves are £30. They spin the ball with ease or you can up the budget to get more recent models. They also do a range of hybrids although custompro are doing the 2010 seve icon hybrid (I got them and love them) for about £50 a piece or £80 for a 2 club set 21* and 24*.

Personally I feel that MD is going to give the best options within (and probably below) the budget for new gear but then I am a fan so would say that.
 
I happen to have an Adams Tour Proto 20* hybrid w Fuji 904HB (Stiff) and a 'Performance' 48* wedge (Denis Pugh marketed these) that has been bent to 50 in my spares bag. Both in top shape. £80 for both (plus shipping - so prob £90 all up).

If going for new, the MD wedges seem very reasonable. And Benross hybrids are very good, and great value too.
