Will be in Edingburgh next week and my brother and a friend are coming up for a long weekend, I will probebly try and book Prestonville for Friday, the only course I've played in Edingburgh .

Anyone recommend a relatively easy/ fun course to play on the Saturday and Sunday for mid to high h/cs, would need to be within 30-45 mins. Of city centre.

What would courses be like at weekends regarding comps.?Are there ones less busy as others?

Thanks.

TBH you could even get to the East Lothian course in 45 at the weekend.

though i image this Sat morning most will have a medal on as its the first Sat of the month

I presume you mean Prestonfield.

Assuming you have a car and are not wanting to spend a shed load of cash I'd consider

1) The Glen in North Berwick
2) Turnhouse near the airport
3) The Braids, a muni but has great views, good greens and won't break the bank. I'd avoid the other muni's

If you are on the west of town Ratho Park is another parkland option which is reminiscent of Prestonfield if you like that type of course. (Or Royal Musselburgh likewise to the East)

If you want a links option Gullane nr 3 would fit the bill.

Plenty of other good options but these are the ones that come to mind.

cheers
Ian

Mortonhall is probably Edinburgh's best course. Heading out of Edinburgh you have fantastic links courses in East Lothian as have been mentioned. Gullane 3 is fantastic value.

Yes I meant Prestonfield , will be getting taxis to the courses, having looked at Mortonhalls website this looks a good option.

Thanks for all the suggestions, much appreciated .

I'm a member at duddingston which is very near prestonfield. Much better course in my opinion. I'll echo Ratho Park, very fun and not long. Braids is a good option and cheap as a council course but I would avoid it if it's windy. There's a lot of gorse too. Mortonhall has a good reputation but I'm not the biggest fan.

A little bit out there's Musselburgh (monktonhall) and Longniddry, both great course and Longniddry is a links style course. Kings Acre is good as a one off with some interesting holes.

There's also Dalmahoy.

The East Lothian courses aren't far and worth a vist- Kilspindie, Dunbar, North Berwick, Gullane.

The other option is Fife- Aberdour is a good short course- some holes hitting over the firth of forth with great views.

Braid Hills as a public, the other public courses suck

Private best course is down to condition and is a toss up between Duddingston and Mortonhall

I'd recommend Mortonhall, i really enjoyed this par 72 course, probably the best in my opinion. You'll need to call to see if they allow visitors at the weekend.

Decided on Prestonfield, Duddingstone which are only 12-15 mins. From where I stay, and I really like the look of Aberdour exactly what I was looking for so hopefully we can get on over the weekend.

Thanks for the info.

Longniddry is tough as nails with pencil in hand due to no par 5s and a huge amount of par 4s 410 and above. I also witnessed my partner bean two balls off the clubhouse in their pairs open. Think SSS there is +3, longest par 68 I've ever seen.

Purely out of interest..Are Duddingston and Mortonhall the best Private courses in Edinburgh?
Better than Bruntsfield or Royal Burgess?

In Edinburgh I've only played Murrayfield and Duddingston of the private clubs. Duddingston is definitely better than Murrayfield, which is decent but nothing special.

Also played Dalmahoy which is just a boring long slog and I have no idea why people rate it so highly.

For me Mortonhall is better than Bruntsfield by a fair margin, haven't played the other two so can't comment.

Dalmahoy does nothing for me.

Duddingston is the best in my opinion. Recently moved there for that reason. Mortonhall is rated as one of the best and the two are mentioned in the same sort of bracket. Bruntsfield and Burgess are the prestigious clubs but in my opinion the course at Burgess doesn't livery up to reputation and I've heard the same of bruntsfield.

Great choice. Let me know your thoughts on both duddingston and Aberdour.

Dalmahoy has two courses, East Course is around 7,500 yds and has a par 6 which is the one you are probably referring to.

The West Course is a lot shorter at just over 5,000 and is more enjoyable for the average golfer.

Both give you great views over Edinburgh

I found it quite easy given an extra 3 shots for sss. From memory fairways can be firm so it doesnt play its length.

Haven't played Bruntsfield but I put Duddingston, Mortonhall and Burgess into pretty much the same bracket. All good courses and not much to choose between them. I'd probably rank them in that order but, as I say, all much of a muchness.
