REAL Winter driving yardages.....

When will people realise that no matter how far you think you can hit it, you are only a little fish in a big pond. If someone reckons they can carry it 270 consistently, well that's for them to worry about. I wouldnt calm anyone a liar until I could (should I feel the need.......) prove otherwise. What people need to realise though is that golf course have undulations in height which can make a good drive look poor or great depending.
Distance isn't everything, it really isn't. It helps especially if you want to improve, but ultimately it's how many not how.

This man speaketh the truth. One of the many reason I never post my yardages.

My yardage is not long, but I know that I finished three out of the last four holes at camberley Heath. A certain long hitter could have walked in on 14, and shot the same score. I was talked out of hitting the correct shot on 18 by another cheating b who went on to win.

Golf is about more than distance.

Interesting post though j1, shows how average is a nonsense, as up hill, down hill, into wind, down wind, cold air, warm air, soft ground, hard ground, rough, fairway, etc, has more impact on driver distance than club head speed.

I have bigger issues in my golfing world than distance. Accuracy, putting, chipping, shanks, bunker shots, mid rions, shanks, course management, swing issues, shanks, lost balls, all come before I even think about how far I haven't hit the last drive

Damn iPhone auto spell junk. You get the jist though.
If you worry about driver on every par 4 and par 5 then course management needs addressing to as there are bound to be some holes that require less than driver to set up the best chance of the lowest possible score.

Probably a 9 iron, not a 6. After a couple of sherbets at lunch time he doesn't know what he's hitting.:D

Can't argue with that one Rich!

You'll get the other 11yds if you take the head cover off your 6-iron :)

I'll try that next time, always been a bit afraid of getting it dirty though!

Is quite an interesting stat though. I know I've hit some good ones that in the wet and slightly colder conditions don't get anywhere near as far as they would do in summer. The bad ones just seem to go nowhere at all!
Might have to crank up the GPS next weekend see whats really going on. Have to give it a miss if I have a bad week as I won't be able to take the bad news.

Wull, what did trackman say that your swing speed was?

average was just shy of 110mph i think.max was 114mph but with a mishit.from what i was told the important number is the ball speed which was 162/163 average.my launch angle was a bit low and i reckon this was due to teeing it lower.

Agree Brendy, last time out, I hit driver on 3 holes on the front and 4 on the back. And my course management is quite awful.

Aye I agree, course management is vital, HOWEVER, I was playing a long hitters paradise...... course management dictates that you belt your driver on practically every hole :)

I've added the distances I had left to the flags.... believe me I was trying to get as close as I could! :D :D

To many people on here get lost in how far they hit the ball ,in the nearly 4 years i've been on here its all you here, now the courses some people play must be just a big field where you smack driver on every hole there's more to golf than that,my course is typical of that its about putting your ball in the right place or your in the crap.

I'm not saying people on here don't hit it miles i'm not but we've heard all this before,Trackman this Trackman that. A good post JO how much of a difference would you get if you did the same in the summer at the same course?

On a day when it all clicks the difference would be absolute night and day Steve. I hit 368yds up the 2nd in the Summer, compare that to 211yds that I hit this time :D :D

Yeh, it was lovely, a tad breezy but the greens were top drawer.

Currently £32.50 for visitors Mon-Fri with an all day breakfast (before or after the round) if you play as a 4-ball.

Makes me realise what a 'short' driver I really am. Even in summer I reckon my carry is only about 200-210 (on one of my better hits). The only plus side is that at those distances I dont get too far into the long stuff when it goes off line. Yet another thing to sort out over the winter!!

This always makes entertaining reading. If you really want to know your carry distance in the winter or summer I suggest that:
1. Get a partner and find a flat practice area
2. Send your partner out as a spotter
3. Hit 11 balls with each club and find the median ball
4. Get a measuring wheel and measure the distance (forget the GPS)
5. Sit down and weep
6. Repeat with each club
7. Retire to bar, have drink and weep again.

PS you will not need a 300yd long area.

My point is Wull, alot of people think they carry the ball further than they do. i was guilty of this also. up until yesturday i was convinced my drives were longer than they were.. and i know im not the only one guilty of this, and some people react differently when told they cannot hit as far as they think they can, or their distances are questioned ;)

i understand what you are saying but this does not apply to everyone, and because you were guilty of it it doesn't mean that if i say i carry x amount that it's not true.as i've said i've played a lot of golf this year at a lot of courses using gps, strokesavers and i rely on knowing what my yardages are.a lot of short par 4's i can reach and this also lets me know how far i carry and hit the ball so i ain't going to come on here and make it up am i?

the problem is people will never believe you,if i cam on here and said my carry yardages were 230-240 no one would say anything...why is that?and there is no way of proving it,the only way would be to play golf with some people on here.
