Thought I'd measure some Winter drives to see what a REAL average drive is, all this talk about 260/280 average etc was just making me laugh so out with the GPS and off I went.....

237yds average :)

I thought it was a pretty interesting statistic. The temp was about 11° and the going was soft but not squishy. The wind was up a bit maybe 10-12mph, I hit one high cut into the wind (2nd drive) and mishit my last two drives off the heel, but even if I discount those 3 drives the average would only be 245yds at best, and if I take away the 3 longest and the 3 shortest it comes in at 239yds.

Another interesting thing is that out of the 14 drives I hit I was the LONGEST on 10 of them.... and yet the guys I was playing with (5hcp & 8hcp) BOTH shot gross 76 and beat me.

Here's the list...

1st 248 (was longest)
2nd 211 (mishit)
3rd 235 (was longest)
4th -
5th 247 (was longest)
6th 234
7th 261 (was longest)
8th -
9th 248 (was longest)
10th 240 (was longest)
11th 233 (was longest)
12th 278 (was longest)
13th -
14th 246 (was longest)
15th 234 (was longest)
16th -
17th 191 (mishit)
18th 220 (mishit)

interesting stats and backs up what I always say about driving stats, lets see the guys who play in warm countries with lots of run keep their 300 average playing here ha ha:p

i was out today and i bombed 2 drives,i didn't have the gps with me but i tee'd them up high and they carried for miles.the trackman says i carry it 266 with a low tee but i reckon next time i'll tee it up like i normally do.on the course i'm carrying it 270 all day long no bull.

My point exactly, trackman has me at 270 carry :)

what you can't fault with them is all the info regarding swing speed, ball speed and the help they give for proper shaft fitting.....

it makes no difference knowing the yardages because you're going to hit it the distance you're going to hit it.conditions are different, wind, firmness of the fairways and whether it's downhill or uphill.only true way of knowing is using gps on the course because you can never be too sure if the trackman is spot on as it's based on calculations.

interesting thread J-1. i hit a few good ones today and like you gps tracked them,. nmy best drive of the day was 235(with ranges of 215-235), i was ready to get the razor blades out. but that said this thread has made me feel alot better.

Just makes you realise that we dont carry teh ball 300 yards in the winter no-matter how big we think our man tackle is.

that gets on my nerves!!!so what you are saying is no matter what anyone says its bull, whats the point in being genuine and honest.i'd be aswell saying i hit it 230 yrds.....is that more believable?

wull, having been in J-1's company and having seen him hit a ball, i can tellyou he isnt a short hitter. ive been fitted on a trackman too (for my r11) and according to that i carry the ball just over 270, in that case between hitting poor quality balls on a trackman instore and hitting the course ive lost atleast 50 yards.. trackman to me is the biggest load of smoke and mirrors possible.

Intersting reading..... Did u hit the fairway with them all ?

No. (let's leave it at that) although nothing was really wildly offline.

My mate who's not short by any means (off 5hcp) hit a decent strike down the 1st and I thought to myself "here we go"...... when I GPS'd it on the way past to my ball it was 208yds.

All you can really do is compare yourself to how others are hitting on the day, no point in going home thinking you are hitting crap when you've got nothing to measure against... just like shooting a few over par in tough conditions and thinking you've played crap and then finding out you beat the entire field.

but the difference to you is i haven't lost any yards on the course.....

thats my point, trackman reckons 270 carry, driving distances today were around 230, thats 40 yards less than what trackman states my carry alone is. so in summary, do i trust trackman... do i boll*x.

nothing gives real distances like hitting a ball, on a course, in real conditions. im sure direct golf juioce the settings so you buy that new super dupa longer stick.

JO the only reason I ask is did your slices or pulls go a similar distance to your well struck ones?

Hard to say shapewise but it's noticable but there's a few in the 234-235 range and then another few in the 246-248 range which I definitely felt I'd hit more solidly.

I'm not saying that these figures are any good or bad, on a Summers day I've driven miles past any of these shots, it was simply an excercise to see what the real figures were ON THE DAY. Another day could be completely different.

those distance for seem pretty realistic for a strong hitter in poor conidtions,

i was only getting between 200-240 today , feel a bit better now

though i think its is a bit presumptious say just one is the standard for driving distance,

for me you occasionally come across players who you simply can't hope to out hit, even once, sound technique and hit the ball HARD

gorilla james in this video is a classic example
