I had a set of 'raw' Miuras and some 'plain' ones at the same time (all forged btw) and there was no detectable difference to the way they played! The 'extra grip' from rust argument is countered by the poorer performance of the grooves in clearing water/sap - from the rust in them. It's not grooves or the surface that created 99.999% of the spin - it's loft, with the ball design contributing some too!
