For the first time since taking up golf (approx 3 years ago) and probably through sheer Saturday afternoon boredom, i've sat and read my way through the entire R&A Rules today (thanks for the link earlier Bob) and it has opened my eyes to a lot of my misgivings.

I thought i knew a fair amount of golf rules that i've picked up over the last few years, but i am sadly mistaken and there is all sorts of stuff in there that conflicts pretty much everything i've been told.

If you havent already done so, and you have an hour spare, i strongly suggest you have yourself a read, it will save you a lot of heartache and also some penalties you may call on yourself which, in actual fact, aren't penalties at all!

R & A Rules as .pdf right click the link and click "save link as" or "save target as" to download a copy to your computer.

I know, the wife is in bed though as she's just come off a night shift, my eldest is out playing with his mates and my youngest is painting on the kitchen table....had sod all else to do so thought i might as well! lol

Good on ya Keef , bout time more people had a look at the rule book.

Some of the things I see players doing are amazing. When you politely say that maybe they have made a error they look at you as though youve just called them an outright cheat. Nowadays I just let them get on with it to save all the confrontation , its all very disappointing though as you need to be clued up and honest cos you spend most of your time on your own in the rough or trees and you need to be trustworthy and knowledgable of the rules

Played with a 7 handicapper the other day who didnt know how to take relief from a staked tree FFS

I try and re-read it every year about now as the season kicks in as its amazing how much you tend to forget. I don't profess to be any kind of expert but it helps to refresh the memory every so often

Dont get me going, Im still looking for mine but I think I will be buying a new one

I tend to read through sections at random every so often and by the end of it, I have fixed in my mind many an interesting rule that had passed me by, but at the same time forget rules that I did know beforehand! :D

I have this one at home and think every club should have a copy in the club house...

I think every serious golfer should have a copy. It certainly explains things very clearly indeed IMO.

We've certainly got a copy in the lounge at the club.
