R&A rules app

thats my whole point, golfshot is not illeagle, but my compass is, so if i dont use golfshot but access r&a rules, i would most probably have access to all stuff that the r&a make illeage, whether i use it or not, hence rule app would be illeagle on over 90% of phones [ i have been told this is the figure that has compassesetc on] hence i am cheating by inference. r&a havent a clue about techno stuff

Not quite.

What I was questioning was the use of a conforming DMD and, at the same time, the use of the Rules App on a device that, if it had a DMD App on it would be non-conforming!

So, say, a SkyCaddie + an iPhone that has a gps app + compass + rules app ++++++++

As long as you're not using the iPhone as a DMD then there's no issue, regardless of what apps may be installed.

Golfshot is not illegal. What makes the iPhone a non-conforming device "when being used as a DMD" is the compass among other things...
If you're not using Golfshot - it can still be installed - then you can use your iPhone for checking a rule via the rules app.
Although the compass is pre-installed, you are not breaking the rules by using the iPhone rule app unless you use the compass as well.

The R&A can't ban specific phones - they can only legislate on Golf Equipment and a phone isn't golf equipment. What they can ban is the use of certain things that could aid a golfer in making his shot.
They have made it pretty clear what can and can't be used within the limits of their "jurisdiction".
A new Smartphone comes out virtually every week - the R&A can't possibly be expected to keep up with all of them.

please tell me the difference from me looking at golfshot as DMD on an iphone, with no intention of using anything else on the phone, and you using exactly the same phone and accessing the rule app?
we both have the same access, but i am cheating [breaking rules] and you are not!!
better still let the r&a explain, as there is no difference

I refer the Honourable Gentleman to the Offside Rule in the (allegedly) beautiful game - no rhyme or reason for it to be like it is - it just is.

The difference is - and I'll admit it's not much - that you are using your phone as a DMD and I'm not.

That's the rule.

Why, when you drive from the wrong tee in a Medal (like me last week - idiot!) are you penalised 2 shots instead of just replaying the drive with a penalty of 1 shot?

Because that's the rule......

Argue it by all means and if you feel strongly enough then you can lobby the R&A to get the rule changed - good luck with that one!

Maybe........ the R&A are concerned that as soon as they say using a smartphone with all these other 'aids' is legal, then an app writer could in theory write the DMD software to integrate with the other stuff.

So for instance, I could point the phone towards the hole and as well as figuring the distance, it uses the compass and internet to assess current wind direction relative to the shot, as well as calculating the effect of any slope gleaned from you holding the phone at the right angle to point to the flag.

Maybe.
