R&A rules app

Had it on my phone for a while now, far better than carrying the book around and scuttling through the pages. Excellent search facility on it and easy navigation.

surely having a phone that supports an app must be illeagle for competitions!!

My thoughts exactly shagster, would you be allowed to whip it out if the occasion arose?... I don't think so, though someone more knowledgeable will be along soon no doubt!

Well, you could whip out the rule book if the occasion arose. Getting information on the rules is not getting advice or information that could influence how you play. There is no rule against using a phone to access the Rules from an app.

The phone would only break the rules if it's being used as a DMD and is classified as a non-conforming device due to weather apps, compass etc etc etc etc ......

If you're just using it to find a rule then it's not a problem.

i think using a phone for a DMD is not a problem, its the access to a compass and weather apps etc, and if you can access the rules app, you then should be able to do more, hence illegal, page 160, 161ish in rule book

Having access to the Internet doesn't render a phone illegal. You can look up the Cricket/Footy scores on the 10th tee if you can swing it past your playing partners. The Rules app can be viewed. Even the R&A are not dumb enough to produce somethig like that if it would be illegal to look at it on the course........or are they..?
What renders a phone illegal is when it has apps/features that are either downloaded or supplied with the phone - the obvious one is the compass in most smartphones. Having a compass is illegal - for what ever reason the R&A see fit and that's another debate - having access to the web isn't. There are certain things you can't do but looking at Rules isn't one of them.

Which is not what Imurg or I were saying. Let me try to nail this one down:

1) A phone used as a DMD is ok.
2) A phone used as a DMD which also has anything that could assist the player in his play like a compass or weather app is not ok even if these apps are not switched on.
3) A Rules app is not considered a device that would assist the player and so is OK on a phone used as a DMD provided it doesn't have compass/weather app etc on.

It's only if the phone is actually being used as a DMD that the presence, or otherwise, of 'anything that can assist....' comes into it.

Which opens up the can of worms about whether, if you are using a, separate, conforming DMD, having the Rules App on a phone, that has Weather, Compass etc available, should disqualify you!.

And if not - why not!

if i cant use golfshot on my iphone because i will cheat [inference] then how can i access an app?
do r&a own skycaddie!!!

You would not be "cheating" by using golfshot on an iPhone as such. You would not be "cheating" to access a rules app (you can download one for the iphone from the R&A website for goodness' sake).

If, however, your iPhone also has any app that is not approved, such as a compass, you cannot use it as a DMD whether these apps are used or not. That's what is clearly being said.

Foxholer raises the question of whether this should be so, but that's another matter from advising you as to what the rules currently are.

Not quite.

I'm 'happy' with the rules on DMDs and DMD apps on phones as per here http://www.randa.org/en/Rules-and-Amateur-Status/Rules-in-Focus/Archive/2011/March/DMDs.aspx

What I was questioning was the use of a conforming DMD and, at the same time, the use of the Rules App on a device that, if it had a DMD App on it would be non-conforming!
