Hi

Im new to the forum. My early 2011 resolution is to take my golf a bit more seriously and improve my handicap. Currently around 18-20 although not official. I play about once every two weeks and practice once a week. Ive had 3-4 lessons in the last couple of months which im enjoying but not seeing as much improvement in my shots as i had expected. Changes to my grip and posture have been the main things and learning to get a bit of draw on the ball.

How many lessons would you normally expect it to take before you see bigger results ? Or what else does anyone recommend to improve their game ?

Thanks

Simon

I would say it varies from person to person as to when you would see a change, personally it seems that I reaally strugle for 4 weeks or so then start to see an improvement. The only thing that works, for me anyway, is patience and hard work, there are no shortcuts!!!!!!!

Its not necessarily the amount of lessons that's important mate, its the amount of practice in between lessons.

You need to ingrain what you have learnt so it becomes natural, the more work you put in between lessons the quicker you will improve in my opinion.

Welcome to the forum,my advice get out onto the course,as has been said. You can do all the lessons, all the range work, but getting out and putting into a round what youve learnt is imo the best way.

I had a pal who asked of he could come out with me to see if he could play golf - we had a super golfing section at work in Edinburgh, where we played Muirfield, The Burgess, Dalmahoy etc and he felt left out when we played - and I accommodated him.

He was a natural and joined a club immediately and whilst his first handicap was 18, by the end of the season he was playing of five.

The reason for this story is that if you have it, you have it - if you don't it is a lot of hard work and it depends, in my opinion, on your natural ability, practise time and commitment which he had.

Hope you also have all three in bucket loads.

Enjoy!

Welcome to the forum!

I always feel like it all gets worse before it gets better after a lesson, can easily take 3 or 4 range sessions after the lesson to begin to get consistency and a grooved feeling with the changes.

Surely now is the ideal time to get on the range and do those drills, because we aint going on the course anytime soon! lol

Welcome to the forum. Where do you play? Personally I'd be working on my game at the range and working at the drills etc you've been shown as it can be tough trying to work new things into your game when the course is frozen, you are cold and the ball is bouncing like crazy all over the place. If we get a thaw and the course is fully open (hopefully over Christmas as I've got time off!!) then go out and give it a go then

Agree with what everyone has said here - natural ability helps but if you have none, like me,then its hard work and determination. The quickest way to get your handicap down and especially if you are only playing a course once every week is find a par 3 course near you and work on your short game. At our level we are always going to miss greens so the best way to save your shots is getting up and down so realy work hard on the short game and ask your pro for a specific short game lesson. Also if you do play a par 3 course it doesnt take up some much of your time.

Good luck

I only started having lessons this year in July, the first 4 changed stance, grip etc and turned me from shooting 90-100 to shooting 84-92, then I suffered a big dip in form as lessons 5-6 have been bigger type of changes. My last lesson was number 7, since then I have started to be much more consistent and started to make a lot of pars, I have yet to be able to make it work in a full 18 holes due to the weather but I think next summer I can look at breaking 80 soon after the season starts.

As said above its all down the the individual, how much time they put in between lessons and how much golf they play. I play a lot so my progression has been rapid, dropping from 17 to 14.5 in about 5 months but for me to make the step to playing to 15 week in week out and getting it lower will take another 5 months at least.
