A break is no bad thing. I often take a year out of yacht racing every 8 or nine years, as the presure to do better, well more to the point retain certain trophies, just gets to much, especially as I'm the one that has to make all the decisions on the boat! I'm currently moving that one year break into two, but I have the golf now.

I think that I'm in the same 'mold' as you regarding scores, stats and expectations. I wish I could just go out and bash the ball around, but I always want to do better. It's not something that's easy to change, it's just who we are. Perhaps consider changing the expectations to each shot rather than the whole round. I know that with some shots (driving) anything half decent (ie I can find the ball!) is good. But I normally do far better with a wedge in my hand, and therefore have higher expectations with that club in my mitts.

I'm out for the first time in 5 or 6 weeks this weekend, my shoulder is crooked from the boatshow, and are not expecting anything to good. But I will still be using my SS2 scorecard and logging everything. I hate to have a decent hole, or round, and not know how I acheived it.

Perhaps using the winter to play without recording your scores would help. At least then you can free your mind about protecting your h'cap or scorecard. Just don't try buying your way out of this situation. Your clubs have worked for you before, they will again.

Good luck.

Sorry to hear this.

It's a funny game. I've told the story about our ex-captain who plays off 18. He loves his golf and chuggs along celebrating pars when they come and trying to keep the big scores off his card. That's his way and I admire him.

There's a few other as well at mine who are way more enthusiastic than me. One guy (off 24) never practices other than maybe a bucket on a Friday, just goes out there and has a laugh. He can play to 18 or 30, he just takes what comes and seems to find his own goals.

Sadly for you (and me, to a lesser extent) we have reached a certain standard in the past and get frustrated. I say try and enjoy the game shot by shot and only go out for a knock when you feel inspired. There's no crime in playing a little less or not chasing the h'cap. It's just a shame we are on the way down (h'cap wise) rather than up. Maybe if we both dropped ourselves onto a new course off 18, we'd not get depressed so easily.

I'll come and visit you for a relaxed 90 each soon I hope. Stroll the fairways, have a chat, enjoy a diet coke and enjoy the good 'uns. Life's too short. You're probably doing the right thing.
