I'm on a roll with spending money at the moment so figure it's time to buy a new putter :D

How important is it to get fitted? I'm really liking the look of the Scotty Cameron Newports, but there seems to be various length shafts / angles to consider. I'm quite tall (6.4) so surely I should get a 35" right? How do you figure out the custom lie?

Your pro should be able to do a basic putter fitting. There are two main elements.

One is length and lie, the other is putter design.

The length and lie is mostly about the way your arms hang and the length that best suits that in order to give a comfortable posture and the ball under your eyes. You do not necessarily need 35" just because you are a tall guy. You may have arms like an orang utan.

The second part is to do with your stroke. If you are a straight back, straight through putter, a face balanced putter is usually best. If you have a gated stroke (open on the back, close on the through), a heel shafted toe weighted putter is probably best. There are different schools of thought on weight. Some people argue that is you play on slow greens or tend to leave the ball short, you need more weight, but others argue that more weight increases the tendency to decelerate and a lighter putter wil make you make a more effective stroke.

I had a £35 fit and lesson session then had my putter adjusted. Best money I ever spent. I could have ordered a new one, but he was happy with my existing choice.
The pro that did it had been trained to do this session by the guys at Yes! golf.
Seriously, don't gamble on choosing one that feels right etc.etc. What feels right will probably be what you're used to. If what you're used to is a weird posture and stroke then the lesson/fitting thing could change your whole perception for ever.
Do it! :)

a fitting should be included in the price- just bought a Scotty and had it fitted, changed lie and loft and grip to suit my stance and particularly the roll of the ball, video evidence showed to much skid before the roll took over so a 1 degree deloft helped that.
DEF get fitted, its half the shots in your round

I see you can't spell odyssey either greg :o :D

Oi! I'm here for golf not grammer lessons :P

that's spelling not Grammar (<note spelling) :D

just pulling yer plonker

well done, you passed my test on the spelling of grammar... /cough

Cheers for the tips guys. I'll try to resist the temptation to buy the first putter I like on the spot and get it properly fitted.

Get it done properly, by someone you can trust, and be guided by them rather than choosing something you like the look and feel of (to a degree).

It can take up to 28 shots off your handicap.

Hit a few putts with the scotty cameron studio select newport and it felt very nice - good weight to it. (Why the hell do i gravitate towards the most expensive bloody gear!?) American golf didn't seem to have any facility to fit me for a putter though. Anyone know of a place I can get fitted in or around London?

I might just wait till holidays in Canada tbh... I'll probably end up paying the same price in $ as I would here in £.
