Ladies/Gents,

Would appreciate your input into 'which putter'.

Currently using a hand-mi-down Hippo putter that you'd do well to get a pint for and is the only club in the bag that hasn't had any investment at all. Christmas is coming so the (short) list will be readied....

I simply wish to get an idea of what comes recommended, as putter choice is huge. At least then I may have narrowed down my search. I don't have a club or pro to turn too and don't initially want to go in an AG and be hovered over for an hour. I guess from having some options to look further into I'd prefer to call in to a pro shop and hope they'd let me use the putting greens to test, if they stock whatever I decide to take a look at....

I don't particulalrly know what I'm talking about technically, but purely from an address perspective, I have no current desire for a mallet or centre-shafted and to add to that I think I putt with an arc so an off-set, toe weighted putter is what i'm after. I think :D

I know the stock answer is the simply try as many as possible as its personal preference, but as there are bloomin' loads, would like you guys to help narrow down that search. Given the putter merry-go-round that many seem to endure, I'm also thinking second hand once AG have been used and abused. I would however buy brand new from the local pro-shop if fitted there and I don't wish to spend over a ton.

Thanks.

Rather than try as many as you can, why not find a brand independent fitter who specialises in putters and fitting putters? that way you will 100% get what is right for you and your putting!

What budget are you thinking?

That I know of Manchester golf club has a putter fitting lab with a lorryload of putters to test out and you can be fitted if you want etc.

First mate I would test a few out see which style putter you think suits you best and then try a few of that style to see which you like best.

On the other hand if you get fitted this will tell you which suits your putting style best etc and you can go from there. If you have doubts about which suits best maybe this is the way to go.

I think theres a similar fitting centre in Merseyside somewhere too but cant remember exactly, might be Warrington.

You may not be a member, but go to a golf club pro shop. I'm sure they will be grateful for the business. Try a few on their putting green - can't beat the real thing. I think putters are all about individual preference - go with what feels best. They will probably fit you for it too. Boom. Present sorted.

Just sommat less than a ton really, don't think i can justify anything over, particularly if i fall out with 'the chosen one' as many of us seem to do!

Cheers Birchy, could be useful given my daily trek, hopefully someone could confirm but at least can start with google.

Edit: What did we do before the t'interweb eh. Middleton, 10 mins away from me. Would never have been bothered lookin' through the yellow pages!

Have to agree with the real thing. Hope to play on Thursday pm so will perhaps start to tentatively nose around

personally i'd stick to the manufacturers that have a heritage for producing great putters. both ping and odyssey have putters for <100. i've a scotty cameron and its been stuck in the bag for 5 1/2 years and counting. bought it for the brand, the feel, the look. i'm 100% confident it's a great piece of equipment and the only one of us who can fail the other is me. it is a pleasure and privilege to use it, and i've saved a fortune by not wasting money on several unsatisfactory cheaper putters that would have been in and out of the bag during the same period had i not invested sensibly in the first place.

Speak to a club pro rather than a high street store. Most will give you independent advice on your type of stroke and the best type to suit and then it is up to you to try as many as you can until you find "the one"
