Professional Golf 2024 & 2025

I don't get it!
the 'spots' were only increased to make up the shortfall caused by sending an extra 10 players to the pgat in the first place

So previously before player’s looked to qualify into the PGAT via multiple events etc

Now a pathway has been created that’s flowed down to allow more spots opened up for the Challenge Tour

If you reduce the pathway into the PGAT then you reduce the pathway from the Challenge Tour into the ET - there is always a knock on affect if you close a door

The PGA for the top players is the easiest way to gain entry into Majors.

The LIV tour is the best way to earn quick money especially when it first started and especially for the players approaching the end of their careers.

What that did do was create space for players like JJ Spaun to sneak into the gap and do really well for themselves.

Yep there is always someone else to come in and fill the space - player pathways are key to keeping things fresh

Yeah when someone leaves then someone else takes their place. Whether that is promotion relegation or retirement, that’s in life not just golf

This is true - it's a shame that the PGAT can't take this view with regard to players wanting to join LIV.

All the tours seemingly have to accept they will lose players who want to better themselves financially on the PGAT, but when the chance comes for players to leave the PGAT, they get a 12 month ban...

How dare you swear and say the PGAT should accept people choosing to go somewhere else for money 🤣

Ironic isn’t it people will defend the top players going from DPWT to PGA for a bigger pay day but choose to go somewhere else other than that and it’s heinous crime and not in the spirit of the game.

End of the day it’s all golf let’s enjoy it for what it is.

If I was an average player on the pga tour and LIV came in with a huge financial offer I would be gone like a shot.
For the likes of Rory or Scottie who earn bundles every year already it is a case of stay where they are and have a better chance in the majors or a few more million to add to their already vast earnings

Well when the player leaves the PGAT they replace them , the PGAT pathway is with the KFT is it not ?

There is no pathway between the PGAT and LIV - when they leave the PGAT to go to an unsanctioned tour they lose their membership - that their tour rules

LIV have a pathway with Asia

Yeah - I think you have to weigh up the possibility of playing in Majors versus the opportunities to earn really strong money. The PGAT events aren't really all that outside a handful, LIV has some already that are gonna be great experiences for the players.

Any young player with a LIV option would surely give it serious consideration.

The pathways keep increasing for LIV players to find a way into the Majors as well, so it's a constantly evolving situation.

Issue is the huge financial offers have gone now , the winnings are there to try and grab but to get the big money players need get up the ladder and earn it

Any of those middle of the road you would see them jump to LIV

Young up coming players - guess it depends where they are in their career and what doors are open already

Not sure how much Scheffler won but Rory won £33mil this season 😂

Tom McKibbin won $10m in his first season in LIV. Pressure is off him now, he can swing freely when he plays. Interesting to see him next year, see how he progresses. I'm sure LIV badly want him to do well also, it's a change of tack for them.
How his career works out over the next 5 years will paint the picture for many upcoming players - he could have taken up the PGAT card and then had a great chance of getting in all the majors and also the Ryder Cup but less money

The money has set him up , managed to get into the Masters and think The Open with a few in Hong Kong ? That’s a platform for him now

Even then though you couldn’t blame Rory or Scotty either. No matter how much money in the bank if LIV came in with an offer of say £500 million to play a lesser schedule, a good chance of picking up more prize money every event, against a ‘weaker’ if you like field. Still playing majors.

All the money in the world already and a lot would call it just greed like they did with Rahm but when in that position the chance to change the lives of generations and generations of your family for signing on a different golf tour for a bit you couldn’t blame them for taking it

I would not blame them no.
For them though they already are worth and will still earn huge amounts of money.
It’s even harder for the likes of a Tom Mcgribbin for example to turn it down though.

And, for the record, none of the majors (Augusta, US Open, The Open Championship, PGA Championship) are run by the US PGA tour. Each has their own qualifying process.

Not sure what people see as an alternative

Since the 80’s players have moved across to the US , it’s set up to help them better , and that’s players from Asia , African , Aus as well - it’s the biggest market and has the corporate sponsers to attract the big prize money and players

what Euro fans fail to realize is that it is not mandatory that the top ten go to the PGAT, they can choose to stay and play on the DPWT, but they do not. The ones that bolt to the PGAT must retain their card, or it's back to the DPWT. Most don't make it due to lack of talent or simple loneliness.

It's a dual membership.

The US majors use the PGAT events as a pathway for access into their majors as well as ranking points which are as we all know bias towards the US Tour

And plenty of them play ET events to ensure that they keep their membership

Rory for example - last 5 events were on the ET , same with Fleetwood ,
BobMac and Fitz pretty similar, a lot of them still play a good number of ET events

The players aren’t machines and need to judge their schedule
Not to mention how the DPWT seems to have embraced the Saudi League players on their tour. No need to complain about a few players chasing money.
