I have only been playing golf since August after 15 years off and until today regarded private clubs as a slight elitist to very elitist, some are and others not so.

I got a taxi to the local Municipal today and on the way the driver was telling me how he liked golf but not so the snobs who stop him wearing his jeans and trainers and sinking nothing except 6 cans of Stella on a round, i I was like

Then I paid my GF and tee'd off. +20 a few pars and not a to bad round until the 15th when a group of juiniors thought they could pick and chose which holes they wanted to play! I carried on until I saw the two OAPs in front of me (they had been very slow and not bothered waving me through so I played two balls) who where moaning to each other and not to the juniors, so I called the pro shop and they confirmed that 4 out of the six had paid and thanked me for checking (even though they had taken 25 minues to p*ss about on the 3 par in front of me and the OAPs!!

Anyway I finished my round I was having a pint when the said juniors where on the range using eachother as targets and whilst the Captain walked past not saying a word I was shocked..

Anyway I thought about another 18 after a couple of pints, everything was fine until the 4th when I saw 4 chavs with jeans and trainers on with hire clubs... I just gave up and walked across and played the 18th.

The moral of the story is, I want to join a private club and I am sick of dog walkers, chavs thinking the course is part of roundhay park and the season hasnt even started yet.

Rant over

Plus side my hcp has only adjusted 0.1 to 20.5 since november

Glad you are coming into the light Parmo.

Yours are the exact reasons why I have applied for club membership. It was getting to the point that I would end up doing a bit of bird over it all as my temper was getting pushed to breaking point with similar idiots down my end.

Sorry you ended up having a rubbish day, it does seem like the staff at the course you mention don't give a damn.

Playing at a private club will be really nice for you.

Yeah I was even considering getting a season ticket for the course ($370) which isnt bad, and as mentioned before I usually play first thing in the morning, but seeing the juniors run riot like ferel kids, and its not the first time either last sunday they where sneaking on the course and members said nothing.

Looks like early morning tee offs until I can talk the wife into letting me join a private club.

As a teenager I played at my local Muni, nice course, but the local 'schemies' were liable to rob you/give you a good doing/shoot you(only an airgun but..)or at worst kill you all on the 17th green which they regarded as their turf!

makes a private club realy boring !

The 2 muni courses that I have used have both been well maintained and well run. Thorpe Wood and Orton Meadows are great examples of how municiple courses should be run and are also kept in good nick. Never had any problems as describe and have generally found etiquette to be Ok as well.

Private course wins any day Parmo. Have been playing Gotts, Roundhay and Temple Newsam for 20 years, so I know where you're coming from. Have only been a member at Rawdon for 2 years and it is a world away. Course immaculate year round, friendly fellow members and not a chav in sight!

I agree that in my experience private beats public anyday.I have a course called Downshire which is run by Bracknell Forest Council not far from me. It has been voted in the past as one of the top 10 public courses in the country and is a magnificent track.

It is a parkland course on draining sandy soil with mature trees and lots of water. If this was a private clubs the annual fee would be close to four figures (given similar rates in the locality).

I love playing it and try to do so several times a year but I always try and pick a midweek time and not in the school holidays.

It has a membership linked to the club who regularly play in competitions and obviously treat it in the same way any of us on here would. Sadly the rest of the time it is full of newbies (I don't begrduge anyone playing a public course to learn) who have no idea of etiqutte. There are feral kids from a nearby housing estate hanging around several holes on the back nine closest to their scummy dwellings and they let green fees on whose idea of golf is to try and whack every shot out of site and consume as much alcohol on the way round.

Such a shame because it really is a great course. Give me the tranquil air of Royal Ascot where even if I do get stuck behind a 4 ball of over 60's with no intention of letting me through I know any polite requests won't be met with verbal abuse or violence and that I will not be used for target practice by the group behind.
