Our club still have preferred lies as the course took a hammering from the rain it is drying out great but what I'm getting at is should they be cutting handicaps when preferred lies are still in place fairways only
As per other thread, no reason that preferred lies means a comp has to be non-qualifying, we play qualifying comps all through the winter with preferred lies in place. Only become non qualifying if they alter the course (usually shortening it by more than 100yds)

Outside the period 1st October to 30th April, you cannot play qualifiers with Preferred Lies in force unless the County Union has granted permission to do so and a Local Rule has been introduced following the granting of that permission.

It could still be a qualifying round, they just adjust the standard scratch.
I won our March medal (41 points) with preferred lies and because there were some mats (2) still in place, the CSS was altered to suit the conditions and I wasn't cut as much.

I imagine that the County Unions would look kindly on applications to allow Preferred Lies given the amount of atrocious weather we've had lately.
That's not actually strictly true, SSS isn't altred because of preferred lies, it could be altered due to the length of the course
That was what I was referring to but I quoted his whole post. The mats made our course shorter and they altered the SSS accordingly.

Interesting..... does that apply equally in Scotland, do you know?

Not at all, we're a parkland course that have played it down all year. We are considering asking permission for our upcoming Open in mid-August, but certainly so far there's been no need to use preffered lies in Aberdeenshire. It does indeed, so someone at the club has to make a phone call prior to a weekend comp to have this in place. Weekly occurrence over the last few weeks I'd imagine![]()
