The Vice Captain at my Club has decided to start up a Powerplay Golf series at our place, and the 30th Aug see's our first event, a 9 Hole Shotgun start, which is already bursting to capacity.
£9, to include Prizes, Grub after, and sounds like a damn good night and a lot of fun..... :D

Scoring sounds good fun too......Normal flags,......'Black' flags......and modified Stableford scoring......makes a great change and hopefully gets some good Club support going too.
They're planning to run it next summer too, once a month, with Bar B Q's & Beer after if it goes well -

Anyone else's club signing into it ?

No, but quite a few on here are going to the GM power play event at The Grove. Should be fun as a one off, but I don't think it will catch on much.

I quite like the idea as an organised, after work 9 hole comp. Would be a bit different and if followed by BBQ and beer even better. I could even see it as a Saturday evening thing to get more people up the club and to involve families who may be willing to wait whilst you play if it will only take a couple of hours.

Only problem at our club is that it is a continuous loop of 18 so not suited to the 9 hole format.

That is a problem at my course too, we are 13 out, 5 back, and the 9th is about as far from the club house as you can get. I can work out an 8 hole layout, or a 13 hole, or may be an 11 hole, but no easy way of doing 9. Stroke indexes would be a bit odd too.

Would you not have to be a really really good iron player to make much of this format? I can see how it works with the pros as they can nail iron shots over and over but for us amateurs just hitting the green is an achievement, it would just be luck which flag you ended up closer to most of the time, would it not?.......hmmmmmm.

Thats a great way to use Powerplay, I would love something like that.

I spent time in Canada and the states and its common to have a Wednesday 'Mens night' round of golf starting in the afternoon followed by buffet and beer, informal and with good weather you ate and drank outside.
Biggest problem for these events is our lovely British weather.
South East though could easily hold such things.

Powerplay looks like FUN and a different way to enjoy golf

Powerplay? is that not like watching tennis only sideways across the court and not length wise, or snooker with multiple whites?

I dont get it.

Interesting views, some for, some against.

I'm all for it, and despite enjoying my Golf as much as I ever have after 20+ yrs playing, I think its a refreshing format and good be great fun.

We all take Golf far too seriously sometimes, Medals galore, pressure golf all the time, so a quick 9 holes with mates with Prize Money, Banter, Beer & Burgers sounds just the job to me.
I'll report back after the 30th.

Playing next week in a charity day at Hindhead, and they have introduced Powerplay holes on the 9th and 18th. Two flags white and black, and you have to select which flag you are playing to before you tee off. Double points for the black flag.

Seems a no brainer to me to go for the black flags. I get shots on both holes, so if I get a gross par to the white flag I get three points, but a bogey on the black flag gets me four points. :D

I've seen me on the course at the moment. Not big and not clever.

I'm sure you talk yourself out of playing well Homer. I play like a tosser most of the time, but at least I walk up to the first tee thinking I'm going to play well.
Those thoughts might desert me by the time I get to the 4th tee but you've got to go in with the glass half full rather than half empty.

Homer walks to the 1st thinking he's gonna play like a knob, and plays like a knob
Smiffy walks to the 1st thinking he's gonna play well, and plays like a knob

Clearly there are a lot of sports psychologists making a lot of money talking sh!te

I go out in the honest belief that today will be my day. Sometimes I can get a fair way around the course before the golfing gods pull the rug from under my feet and sometimes it takes one hole. I'm not playing well. End of and why I'm back to 14. I am hitting it well on occasions but not converting. Other days I'll go out and hit it like a muppet without any reason
